Blackberries - Twist Shout

Twist Shout by Blackberries: A Soul Shakedown That Still Kicks Ass Alright, let’s get one thing straight—this ain’t your grandma’s Sunday afternoon playlist. The Blackberries’ Twist Shout (1973) is a raw, unfiltered punch to the gut of funk and soul that refuses to play nice. Produced by Steve Marriott, this record slaps harder than most albums from its era. Released across Germany, France, and the UK on A&M Records, it’s got grit, groove, and just enough swagger to make you forget what year it is. First off, the title track “Twist & Shout.” Yeah, yeah, we’ve all heard covers of this classic before, but damn if the Blackberries don’t own it like nobody else. Their version doesn’t just twist—it contorts, writhes, and flat-out explodes in your face. It’s messy, loud, and dripping with attitude. You can practically hear the sweat hitting the studio floor. This isn’t some polished pop rendition; it’s a battle cry for anyone who’s ever been told they’re too much. If I had to pick one reason why this album sticks with me, it’s because of how this track makes my chest rattle like an old car engine. Turn it up loud enough, and you’ll feel invincible. Then there’s “Don’t Change On Me,” which hits different but still packs a wallop. Where “Twist & Shout” screams chaos, this tune whispers desperation. It’s slow-burning soul at its finest—a plea wrapped in velvet vocals and smoky instrumentation. What gets me every time is the way it builds. By the end, you’re not just listening anymore; you’re living it. It’s the kind of song that reminds you how music can crawl inside your head and stay there long after the needle lifts. Sure, the production has its quirks—some might call them flaws—but that’s exactly why Twist Shout works. It doesn’t try to be perfect. Instead, it leans into the cracks, letting imperfections shine through like scars earned in a bar fight. And honestly? That’s refreshing as hell. Here’s the kicker though—listening to this album feels less like nostalgia and more like stumbling into a secret party where everyone knows something you don’t. Maybe that’s why it hasn’t faded into obscurity. Or maybe it’s just proof that great soul music never really dies—it just waits for the right ears to find it again. Either way, Twist Shout deserves a spot in your collection. Just don’t blame me when your neighbors start complaining about the noise.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The Blackberries' album *Twist Shout* from 1973 was produced by Steve Marriott, who you might know as the legendary frontman of Small Faces and Humble Pie. It’s wild to think about him stepping into the producer’s chair for this soulful project. The album even features a fresh take on *Twist & Shout*, a song that’s been covered by so many artists, but this version has its own funky charm. Released in Germany, France, and the UK on A&M Records, it’s a hidden gem for soul music fans.

Wonderful. TY. Noting Blackberries also background vocals on Rita Coolidge's 1971 studio album. THOSE liner notes will blow anyone away. The talent of that era is unmatched IMHO.
