Cola Boy - He Is Cola

He Is Cola by Cola Boy: A Retro Dancefloor Gem That Still Fizzes Let’s get one thing straight—1991 wasn’t just grunge and flannel. Over in the UK and Europe, something bubbly was brewing, and it came in the form of He Is Cola by Cola Boy. This album is like a fizzy can of pop left out in the sun too long—it bursts with energy, sweetness, and just enough weirdness to keep you hooked. It’s part Pop/Rock, part Electronic, but mostly? Pure House and Euro House vibes designed for smoky clubs or late-night bedroom dance parties. The whole package screams early ‘90s cool, from the slick design work by Pointblanc to Joe Dilworth’s moody photography that makes you wanna wear sunglasses indoors. And let’s not forget Ian Catt on engineering duties—he’s basically the unsung hero here, making sure every beat hits harder than your last breakup. Now, onto the tracks. You’ve got “He Is Cola (Original Mix)” kicking things off, which feels like stepping into a neon-lit arcade where everyone’s dancing instead of playing Pac-Man. The bassline bounces around like it owns the place, while those synthy hooks are so catchy they’ll lodge themselves in your brain for days. Seriously, try listening once without humming it later—I dare you. But if I had to pick a standout, it’d be “Do You Dream In Cola? (Full Length).” This track is pure magic. It starts slow, almost teasing you, then BAM—drops into this euphoric groove that feels like floating through clouds made of glitter. There’s something about the way the vocals blend with the pulsing beats; it’s dreamy yet sharp, like biting into a perfectly ripe apple. Every time I hear it, I’m transported back to some imaginary rave where no one cares what year it is because the music says it all. Oh, and props to Stanley, Catt, Grace, and Wiggs for penning these bangers. Whoever they are, they clearly knew how to craft tunes that stick. Even the Nautilus Workout Mix of “He Is Cola” has its own charm, though honestly, after hearing the original, anything else feels like trying to improve on perfection—and kinda missing the mark. So yeah, He Is Cola might not have been the most groundbreaking album of its era, but it didn’t need to be. What it does do—and damn well—is capture a moment in time when house music was still finding its feet, stumbling gloriously forward with style. Listening now feels like rediscovering an old mixtape you forgot you made—it’s nostalgic, fun, and oddly comforting. And hey, isn’t that what great music should do? Make you feel something real, even decades later. Or maybe just make you want to grab a cola and hit the floor. Either way, mission accomplished. (Also, side note: who names themselves Cola Boy? Genius move. Totally works.)

About Cola Boy

Cola Boy was a duo consisting of Janey Lee Grace and Andrew Midgley. Andrew had worked with Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs on studio material in their pre-St Etienne days in the late 1980s. Janey had been a backing singer for numerous pop acts, including and Patsy Kensits , and was a radio broadcaster on LBC. sang the vocals on the original white label version of 7 Ways. After that initial batch sold out, it was re-recorded with vocals by Sarahs friend Janey Lee Grace, as Sarah was under contract to another label and was not permitted to sing on non-St Etienne releases. Janeys version of 7 Ways is the one that was subsequently picked up and released by Arista Records, but in the meantime the original Sarah version was heavily bootlegged, costing Arista many thousands of sales. A further Cola Boy connection with Sarah was that the duo were managed by Sarahs mother, who had previously worked with and managed a number of acts, including Wee Papa Girl Rappers. There was a second Cola Boy single, He Is Cola, which was spectacularly unsuccessful. That fulfilled the two-single deal with Arista, and the contract was not renewed. With other labels interested in picking them up, Janey was keen to continue working on new Cola Boy material, but Andrew had by then started work on a new project, Blinder, and was writing darker, non-pop dance material. Cola Boy fell apart in late 1991/early 1992, and Andrew moved north. Blinder enjoyed some limited cult success on the northern England and Scottish rave circuit, before dissolving towards the end of 1993. Andrew subsequently moved into journalism and composing music for television..

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The 1991 album *He Is Cola* by Cola Boy was a wild mashup of genres and styles, blending Pop/Rock, Electronic, House, and Euro House into one fizzy concoction. It’s like they took everything cool about dance music at the time and bottled it up. One standout detail? The album featured multiple versions of the same tracks, like "He Is Cola" and "Do You Dream In Cola?"—each with its own twist. So if you ever wanted to hear the same song in seven different ways, this was your jam. Oh, and fun tidbit: Joe Dilworth handled the photography, giving the album that iconic '90s vibe. Definitely a product of its time!
