Album Review: Symphonien NO100 Militär Military NO99 by Haydn Alright, so I recently spun Symphonien NO100 Militär Military NO99 by Haydn, performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker under Herbert von Karajan. Released in 1982 on Deutsche Grammophon, this one’s a proper gem for classical fans—or anyone who digs lush orchestral sounds with some serious oomph. First off, let me just say—Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker? That combo is like peanut butter and jelly. They don’t mess around. This album has two symphonies (Hob. I:100 "Militär" and Hob. I:99), and while both are killer, there were a couple of tracks that really stuck with me. Take “Menuet. Allegretto - Trio - Menuet” from the Military Symphony, for instance. It starts off all elegant and poised, but then BAM—it hits you with those punchy brass bits that feel like they’re straight outta a battlefield parade. The contrast between the refined strings and the bold percussion is wild. Like, how does something sound so fancy yet also kinda badass at the same time? Every time I hear it, I imagine some old-school army marching through a palace hall. Weird visual, sure, but hey, that’s what great music does—it makes your brain go places. Then there’s “Finale. Presto” from Symphony No. 99. Oh man, this track is pure energy. The violins are zipping along like caffeinated bees, and the whole thing feels like it’s building up to… something big. But instead of going full explosion, it keeps teasing you with these clever little twists and turns. It’s playful, almost mischievous, and honestly? It made me grin like an idiot. Not every piece of classical music can do that. The production quality here is top-notch too. Günter Hermanns did the engineering, and dude knew his stuff—the balance between instruments is spot-on. You can pick out every detail without losing the overall vibe. And props to Peter Schuppe for the art direction; the cover’s simple but classy, which fits perfectly with the music inside. Now, here’s the random thought I had while listening: Why isn’t more classical music used in video games? Seriously, imagine playing some epic strategy game with these symphonies blasting in the background. Those military drums would fit right into a boss battle scene! Anyway, if you’re into classical or just want to dip your toes into Haydn’s world, grab this album. It’s not just another dusty record—it’s alive, vibrant, and totally worth your time. Plus, knowing that legends like Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker brought it to life adds a whole other layer of coolness. So yeah, give it a shot. Your ears’ll thank ya.

About Haydn, Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan

Born: 1732-03-31 (Rohrau, Austria) Born 31 march or 1st April, 1732. Died: 1809-09-05 (Vienna, Austria). Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He brings the "sonata form" to a very high degree of improvement. His symphonies and his string quartets (forms of which he is considered "the father") have become highly inspirational style models. Haydn made a fundamental contribution to the development of chamber music; thanks to the numerous quartets, trios for piano, for strings and also with the unusual trios for baryton, viola and cello.
