Album Review: "I'm In Love" by Hortense & Alton So, picture this: it’s 1963 in Jamaica, and out comes I’m In Love, a little gem from Hortense & Alton under ND Records. This album is like a warm breeze on a summer evening—smooth, catchy, and kinda hard to forget. It blends pop and reggae vibes with ballad and ska styles, which sounds like an odd mix but trust me, it works. Let’s talk tracks. First up, “I’ll Come Softly.” Oh man, this one hits different. It’s got that laid-back reggae groove, but there’s also this heartfelt ballad feel that sneaks up on you. Hortense’s voice? Pure magic. It’s soft yet full of emotion, like she’s singing just for you. The lyrics are simple, but they stick. I found myself humming it while folding laundry the other day, which doesn’t happen often unless a song really grabs me. Then there’s the title track, “I’m In Love.” Honestly, how do you not vibe with a song that’s so unapologetically romantic? Alton takes the lead here, and his tone is smooth as butter. The ska rhythm gives it this playful bounce, making it impossible not to tap your foot or bob your head. There’s something about the way the duo harmonizes—it feels genuine, like they’re actually giddy in love. You can hear the chemistry, and that’s rare. What makes this album stand out is its chill factor. It’s not trying too hard to impress anyone; it just is. Back in ’63, when things were simpler, this record must’ve been a breath of fresh air. Even now, it has this timeless quality, like rediscovering an old photo album you forgot existed. Here’s the thing though—I didn’t expect to get so hooked on a 60-year-old album from Jamaica. Like, who knew ska could sound so sweet alongside ballads? Maybe that’s the charm of I’m In Love. It reminds you that music doesn’t need all the bells and whistles to hit home. Sometimes, it’s just two voices, a guitar, and a whole lot of soul. Final thought? If Hortense & Alton were around today, I’d totally slide into their DMs (if they had social media) to say thanks for creating something so effortlessly cool. Guess what? Now I’m craving jerk chicken. Go figure.
