Album Review: 遭遇一番 ピアノと尺八 プロジェクションエセムプラスティク ピアノのための仮象 Alright, let’s talk about this gem from 1980—遭遇一番 ピアノと尺八 プロジェクションエセムプラスティク ピアノのための仮象. Yeah, that’s a mouthful, but trust me, it’s worth diving into. This Japanese contemporary classical album brings together three composers: Maki Ishii, Joji Yuasa, and Shukou Mizuno. Released under Denon, it’s one of those records that sneaks up on you, leaving little traces in your brain long after the music stops. First off, the track 遭遇一番 SO-GU I fur shakuhachi and klavier is unforgettable. It’s like being caught in a storm where the rain is made of sound. The interplay between the shakuhachi (a traditional Japanese bamboo flute) and the piano feels both ancient and futuristic at the same time. There are moments when the shakuhachi breathes so softly you almost forget it’s there, only for it to burst back in with an intensity that makes you sit up straight. And then there’s the piano—it doesn’t just accompany; it wrestles with the shakuhachi, creating these tense, beautiful dialogues. You can tell Ishii wasn’t just writing notes here—he was building worlds. Another standout is ピアノのための仮象 Provisional Color For Piano. If I had to describe it in two words, they’d be “mysterious” and “alive.” Joji Yuasa crafted something that feels like watching clouds shift across the sky—you think you’ve got it figured out, but then it changes shape again. The piece moves slowly, almost meditatively, but don’t let that fool you. Every note has purpose, every pause feels deliberate. By the end, you’re left wondering if what you heard was real or some kind of auditory illusion. Honestly, it’s haunting in the best way possible. Now, full disclosure: this isn’t background music. It demands attention, maybe even multiple listens. But once you give it that time, it rewards you big time. What struck me most was how modern these compositions still feel nearly 45 years later. Sure, they’re rooted in classical traditions, but there’s something experimental and daring about them that pushes boundaries even today. Here’s the thing—I didn’t expect to love this album as much as I do. I mean, who sits down thinking, “Yeah, I’m gonna vibe with some avant-garde Japanese piano and shakuhachi tonight”? Not me, apparently. Yet here we are. Maybe it’s because the music feels less like listening and more like experiencing. Or maybe it’s because albums like this remind us that art doesn’t have to fit neatly into boxes. Either way, hats off to Maki Ishii, Joji Yuasa, and Shukou Mizuno for making something so bold and timeless. Oh, and random thought? Listening to this while staring out a rainy window might just change your life. Try it.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: In 1980, Japan released a unique classical music album that blended traditional and contemporary sounds. Titled *遭遇一番 ピアノと尺八 プロジェクションエセムプラスティク ピアノのための仮象*, it featured works by composers Maki Ishii, Joji Yuasa, and Shukou Mizuno. One track combines the ancient shakuhachi flute with piano, creating an eerie yet beautiful dialogue between old and new. Another piece experiments with abstract piano tones, almost like painting with sound. It’s a hidden gem from Japan’s avant-garde music scene.

私には、シュトックハウゼン(ドイツ)らの電子音楽をピアノ独奏で弾いたような響きがすると思えるのだが、実際にはどうなのだろうか。先鋭的で個性的な響きを感じる。
