Album Review: Lift Up Your Voice And Sing by Primary Children Of The Tempe Stake Alright, so let’s talk about this gem from way back in 1964—Lift Up Your Voice And Sing. It’s a religious album made by the kids of the Tempe Stake, part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Now, before you roll your eyes at “non-music” or “religious,” hear me out. This isn’t some slick studio production—it feels homemade, like a warm hug from your grandma on a cold day. And honestly? That’s what makes it kinda special. First off, can we just appreciate how packed this album is? There are so many tracks (seriously, I lost count), and they’re all over the place thematically. You’ve got songs about God, America, pioneers, birthdays, presidents, streams giving stuff… yeah, it’s random but also wholesome as heck. Two tracks stuck with me more than the rest: "I Am A Child Of God" and "Popcorn Popping On The Apricot Tree." "I Am A Child Of God" hits different because, well, it’s one of those timeless tunes that sticks to your soul. Even if you’re not super into religion, there’s something comforting about hearing little voices belt out lyrics that remind you life has meaning—or at least that someone up there might care. Plus, it’s catchy! Like, annoyingly catchy. I caught myself humming it while doing dishes last night, which was weird since I don’t even own an apricot tree. Then there’s "Popcorn Popping On The Apricot Tree," which is hands down my favorite. Who wouldn’t love a song about popcorn randomly popping on trees? It’s quirky, fun, and totally unexpected. I mean, imagine being a kid listening to this for the first time—you’d either think it was the coolest thing ever or be really confused about agriculture. Either way, it’s memorable. Also, props to whoever came up with that imagery; it’s pure creative gold. What strikes me most about this album is its innocence. These aren’t polished performances by professional singers—they’re real kids singing their hearts out. Sometimes they hit the wrong notes, sometimes the tempo feels off, but none of that matters. It’s raw and genuine, like flipping through an old photo album where everyone’s smiling too hard because cameras used to take forever. Anyway, wrapping this up—I gotta say, reviewing this album felt like stepping into a time capsule. It’s not perfect, but maybe that’s why I liked it. In a world full of autotune and overly produced beats, hearing these unfiltered voices reminds you that music doesn’t always have to be complicated to make you smile. Oh, and bonus points for making me crave popcorn halfway through. Who knew spirituality could double as snack inspiration?
