Album Review: A Fool Like You by Yachts – A Pop Rock Gem from 1981 Alright, let’s talk about A Fool Like You, the quirky little album by Yachts that kinda flew under the radar back in ‘81. If you’re into that UK pop-rock vibe with just enough edge to keep things interesting, this one might be right up your alley. Released on Demon Records, it’s got a scrappy charm that feels like a mixtape made by your coolest mate. First off, can we take a sec to appreciate the track Dubmarine? It’s the kind of song that sneaks up on you. Starts off all mellow and groovy, then BAM—hooks you with these lush harmonies and a bassline so smooth it could lull a shark to sleep. Henry Priestman and the gang really nailed the balance between chill and catchy here. I mean, who doesn’t love a tune that makes you wanna bob your head while pretending you’re deep in thought? The layered production gives it this warm, lived-in feel, like an old sweater you don’t wanna throw out even though there’s a tiny hole in the sleeve. Then there’s the title track, A Fool Like You. This one hits different. It’s punchier, more upfront, and honestly? It’s hard not to sing along after the first listen. Mick Shiner and co. bring some serious energy here, blending sharp guitar riffs with lyrics that are equal parts cheeky and heartfelt. There’s something oddly relatable about admitting you’re a bit of a fool for someone—it’s messy but real, ya know? Plus, Jon Astrop’s production adds this crispness that makes every instrument pop without overwhelming the vocals. Props to Porky for cutting the lacquer too; the sound quality still holds up decades later. What sticks with me most about this album is how unpretentious it feels. These guys weren’t trying to reinvent the wheel—they just wanted to make good tunes, and they did. Bob Bellis, Martin Watson, and the rest of the crew clearly had fun putting this together, and that joy translates straight to the listener. The cover art (courtesy of Assorted Images) is simple yet striking—a perfect visual match for the music inside. Looking back, A Fool Like You reminds me of those random discoveries you stumble upon in a dusty record shop. You pick it up because the title catches your eye or maybe because the price is right, and suddenly you’ve found a new favorite. Weirdly enough, listening to it now feels like reconnecting with an old friend—I didn’t realize how much I missed it until it was spinning again. Oh, and here’s the kicker: rumor has it Yachts almost called it quits before finishing this album. Can you imagine? Thankfully, they stuck it out, and we got this gem. Makes you wonder what other great stuff almost slipped through the cracks, doesn’t it?

About Yachts

From Wikipedia: The group was formed by art students in Liverpool in April 1977 out of an earlier band, known variously as 'Albert Dock' or 'Albert and the Cod Warriors', who had supported the Sex Pistols on one of their infamous early gigs the previous year. The band originally consisted of Bob Bellis (drums, vocals); John (J.J.) Campbell (vocals); Martin Dempsey (bass guitar, vocals) (later replaced by first Ray "Chopper" Cooper, then Mick Shiner and finally Glyn Havard); Henry Priestman (vocals, keyboards); and Martin Watson (guitar, vocals). They played their first show (as Yachts) at Eric's nightclub in Liverpool, supporting Elvis Costello. This led to a recording contract with Stiff Records, where they released one single, the witty and self-referential "Suffice To Say
