Album Review: Songs of Billie Holiday by Billie Holiday Alright, let’s talk about Songs of Billie Holiday. It’s one of those jazz records that just hits different, you know? Released under Verve Records in Italy (yeah, Italy—random, right?), this album feels like sitting in a smokey café at 2 AM, even if you’re just chilling on your couch. Billie’s voice? Pure magic. Like honey poured over gravel—smooth but raw. Now, I gotta shout out two tracks that stuck with me. First up, “What’s New.” Man, this one grabs you by the soul and doesn’t let go. The way Billie stretches out the notes—it’s like she’s telling you a whole story without needing extra words. You can almost picture her leaning into the mic, eyes closed, feeling every word. And the trumpet solo? Chef’s kiss. It’s not flashy; it’s just… perfect. Makes me wanna slow dance with someone who understands silence. Then there’s “When Your Lover Has Gone.” Oof, this one cuts deep. If heartbreak had a soundtrack, this would be it. Billie sounds so vulnerable here, like she’s spilling her guts for all of us to hear. Every time I listen, I’m like, “Damn, Billie, did you read my diary or what?” The piano behind her is subtle but packs a punch—it’s like it knows exactly when to stay quiet and when to chime in. Honestly, it makes me want to call an ex I shouldn’t… bad idea, great song. This album isn’t trying too hard, which is probably why it works so well. No frills, no gimmicks—just pure, unfiltered emotion. Listening to it feels like having a late-night convo with an old friend. Except, uh, this friend happens to be Billie Holiday. Here’s the thing though—why Italy? Like, how did this end up being released there first? Feels kinda random, but hey, maybe they just got it before everyone else. Lucky them. Anyway, if you haven’t heard Songs of Billie Holiday, do yourself a favor and press play. Just don’t blame me if you start crying during track three.
