Led Zeppelin - Welcome Back

Review by Robin Swartz

Welcome Back by Led Zeppelin – A Rock Beast That Roars Straight Outta Japan Alright, let’s get one thing straight: Welcome Back ain’t your typical Led Zeppelin album. Released in ‘97 via Tarantura (a label known for bootlegs and live gems), this sucker is raw, unfiltered, and dripping with the kind of energy only Zeppelin can deliver. It’s not perfect—hell, it’s unofficial—but damn if it doesn’t feel like a punch to the gut from rock ‘n’ roll itself. First off, we gotta talk about "Stairway to Heaven." Yeah, yeah, you’ve heard it a million times before, but on Welcome Back, they rip into it like it’s still 1971. The build-up? Insane. The solo? Absolutely fing nuts. Jimmy Page shreds like his life depends on it, while Robert Plant belts out those high notes like he's trying to wake the gods themselves. This version reminds me why people lose their minds over this song—it’s not just iconic; it’s untouchable. Every note feels alive, like the band knew they were creating something immortal. Then there’s "Whole Lotta Love Medley Inc. Boogie Chillun’." Holy crap, this track is wild. They take one of their heaviest jams and mash it up with John Lee Hooker’s blues classic. Bonham’s drums hit harder than a freight train, and when they slide into that dirty boogie riff, you better hold onto something solid. It’s chaotic as hell, but that’s what makes it so good. You can practically smell the sweat and smoke in the air. If this doesn’t make you wanna bang your head or scream at the top of your lungs, check your pulse—you might be dead. The rest of the album? Same deal. Tracks like “Dazed and Confused” stretch out into epic territory, while deep cuts like “That’s The Way” show off the softer side of Zeppelin without losing any edge. And don’t even get me started on how smooth “Tangerine” sounds here—it’s like hearing an old friend tell you everything’s gonna be alright. But here’s the kicker: this album came out in Japan almost three decades after these songs were first recorded. What does that say about Led Zeppelin? That their music doesn’t age—it evolves. Even when it’s rough around the edges, it hits harder than most bands could ever dream of. So yeah, Welcome Back might not be for everyone. It’s messy, loud, and kinda feels like eavesdropping on history. But isn’t that what rock ‘n’ roll’s all about? Breaking rules, making noise, and leaving a mark that won’t fade—even if it comes from halfway across the world in 1997. Oh, and one last thing: listening to this made me realize something weird. For a band that split decades ago, Led Zeppelin never really left. They’re like ghosts haunting the soul of rock music. And honestly? I’m glad they stuck around.

Led Zeppelin formed out of the ashes of The Yardbirds.  had joined the band in its final days, playing a pivotal role on the group's final album, 1967's , which also featured string arrangements from . During 1967, the Yardbirds were fairly inactive.  Whilst the band members decided the group's future, Page returned to session work in 1967. In the spring of 1968, he played on Jones' arrangement of 's "Hurdy Gurdy Man." During the sessions, Jones requested to be part of any future project Page would develop. Page would have to assemble a band sooner than he had planned. In the summer of 1968, the Yardbirds' and left, leaving Page and bassist with the rights to the name, as well as the obligation of fulfilling an upcoming fall tour. Page set out to find a replacement vocalist and drummer. Initially, he wanted to enlist singer Terry Reid and Procol Harum's drummer B.J. Wilson, but neither musician was able to join the group. Reid suggested that Page contact Robert Plant, who was singing with a band called Hobbstweedle. Inducted into Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 (Performer).

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Welcome Back* by Led Zeppelin isn’t your typical release. It came out in 1997 in Japan, not as an official studio project but as a live compilation. Fans got to relive some of the band’s most iconic performances. Tracks like "Stairway to Heaven" and "Whole Lotta Love Medley" are included, blending classic rock magic with raw energy. What makes it even more unique? It was released under the label Tarantura, known for its bootleg-style recordings. A true gem for die-hard Zeppelin fans!

I was at this show (with about 15,000 other people!! haha!) One of my favorite memories of a show. Super memorable, particularly the acoustic set in the middle which I wasn't expecting, but loved. I was 16 at the time.

How did he escape his adventure with his teeth intact? On stage, with a tape on him?...must have been venue security not Zep handlers.....

Probably Zep's live peak. US Tour 1972. 50 yrs ago. I hope Jimmy has more multitracks from this tour. However, the LA and Long Beach shows that made up HTWWW is probably all there is. Shame as this is rock music at its best. Thx for the upload!!

One more comment - towards the end of "stairway" in this audience recording someone keeps repeating "The best!". Of course, I agree. However, it reminded me of an experience I had at the October 21, 1995 Page & Plant show in Hartford, CT. I had second row Greenpeace tickets and in the first row, right in front of me, was a guy who kept turning his back to Jimmy and, facing the audience, shouted repeatedly at the top of his lungs, "The best!" Of course, this guy was a royal pain in the a&&. Low probability, I know, but I love the idea that these two guys might be the same!
