Album Review: Прелюды Испанское Каприччио by Ф. Лист & Н. Римский-Корсаков (1963) Alright, let’s talk about this gem from the USSR—a record that feels like stepping into a time machine and landing smack in the middle of 1963. Прелюды Испанское Каприччио is one of those albums where you just know everyone involved poured their soul into it. Conducted by Г. Рождественский and performed by the Симфонический Оркестр Всесоюзного Радио, this thing hits hard. It’s classical music, sure, but not the kind that puts you to sleep—it’s alive, man. Let me break it down for ya. First off, there’s Испанское Каприччио, Соч. 34. Oh boy, does this track slap! From the opening notes, you’re hit with this fiery energy—like someone lit a match under the orchestra. The strings? Razor-sharp. The brass? Blazing. You can almost picture flamenco dancers stomping their feet on stage while the violins go wild. Honestly, I couldn’t stop nodding my head to this one; it’s got rhythm, spice, and drama all rolled into one. Every time that main theme comes back around, it feels like an explosion of color. Like… whoa. Just whoa. Then there’s Прелюды. Симфоническая Поэма, which takes things down a notch but still punches you right in the feels. This piece is more introspective, slower-burning, but no less powerful. There are moments when the orchestra swells so beautifully that it gives you goosebumps—you know what I mean? That mix of sadness and hope at the same time? Yeah, that. It’s the kind of music that makes you stare out the window and think deep thoughts, even if you didn’t plan to. What really gets me about this album is how raw it feels. Sure, it was recorded ages ago, but the passion hasn’t faded one bit. Listening to it now, in 2023, feels kinda surreal. Like, these musicians were living through a totally different world—the Cold War era, all that jazz—but here we are vibing to the exact same sounds they created back then. Music bridges gaps, huh? Oh, and quick shoutout to the labels behind this release: Апрелевский Завод Грампластинок, Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga, and Līgo. Props to them for putting this out there. Back in ’63, vinyl was king, and boy, did they nail it with this pressing. So yeah, wrapping this up… If you’ve never heard Прелюды Испанское Каприччио, do yourself a favor and give it a spin. And hey, maybe don’t listen alone—grab a friend or two, crank up the volume, and let the magic happen. Because honestly? Classical music doesn’t always have to feel stiff or boring. Sometimes, it’s just straight-up badass. Who knew Russians could make Spanish-inspired tunes sound THIS good? Go figure.

Born: October 22, 1811, Doborján, Austria-Hungary (present-day Raiding, Austria). Died: July 31, 1886, Bayreuth, Germany. Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor, music teacher, arranger, organist, philanthropist, author, nationalist and a Franciscan tertiary. He was a renowned performer throughout Europe, noted especially for his showmanship and great skill with the piano. To this day, he is considered by some to have been the greatest pianist in history. Liszt's musical invention went into territories which were then almost unexplored, in particular as regards harmonic research, as emerges from the late piano works, which led him to anticipate fragments of harmonies from the early twentieth century. His preference for program music is testified by the numerous symphonic poems he composed. Father-in-law to .
