John Lee Hooker - The King Of Folk Blues

Review by Keith Hinze

The King Of Folk Blues by John Lee Hooker: A Raw, Soulful Journey If you’re a fan of blues music that feels like it’s straight from the soul, The King Of Folk Blues by John Lee Hooker is an album you don’t wanna sleep on. Released under America Records in France (yep, France!), this record has that gritty, earthy vibe only Hooker can pull off. It’s not perfect—it doesn’t try to be—but man, does it hit hard when it needs to. Let me tell ya about two tracks that really stuck with me. First up, “My Mother-In-Law Moved In.” Now, I know what you’re thinking—mother-in-law jokes? Really? But trust me, this one’s different. Hooker takes something as ordinary as family drama and turns it into a groovy lament. The rhythm is so simple yet hypnotic, and his voice sounds like he’s telling you the story over a late-night drink. You almost feel bad for laughing at his misfortune, but hey, that’s the magic of Hooker—he makes life’s headaches sound kinda fun. Then there’s “Fire At Natchez,” which hits like a punch to the gut. This track tells the tale of a real-life tragedy, and Hooker’s delivery gives me chills every time. His guitar work here is hauntingly sparse, letting the lyrics do most of the talking. By the end, you’re left sitting there, thinking about how powerful storytelling through music can be. No bells, no whistles—just raw emotion laid bare. Credit where it’s due: Al Collins nailed the design, giving the album cover that vintage look that matches the mood perfectly. And shoutout to J.P. Leloir for the photography—it’s got that old-school charm that makes you wanna hold the vinyl in your hands. Chuck Ellsworth’s liner notes are worth a read too; they give some nice context without sounding like a history textbook. What strikes me about this album isn’t just the music itself—it’s how unpolished it feels. In today’s world of auto-tune and perfectionism, hearing something this authentic is refreshing. It reminds me of those long road trips where you just let the music take over, no matter where you’re headed. So yeah, if you’re looking for an album that’ll make you nod your head, tap your foot, and maybe even shed a tear or two, check out The King Of Folk Blues. Just don’t blame me if you start craving some smoky bar vibes after listening. Funny thing though—I never thought I’d say this, but now I kinda want my mother-in-law to move out… again.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: John Lee Hooker’s album *The King Of Folk Blues* wasn’t just a blues masterpiece—it was also a French production. Yep, it was released in France under the label America Records. The album features some raw, soulful tracks like "Risin’ Sun" and "Shake It Up And Go," but here’s the kicker: the liner notes were written by Chuck Ellsworth, and the photography was done by J. P. Leloir, who was known for capturing iconic images of musicians. So, it’s not just music; it’s a little piece of cross-cultural history.
