Album Review: 激突 Geki Totsu by Color – A Wild Ride Through Punk and Speed Metal Chaos If you’ve ever wondered what happens when punk rock crashes headfirst into speed metal with zero brakes, 激突 Geki Totsu (or Collision) by Japanese band Color is your answer. Released in 1990 under the Free-Will label, this album feels like a chaotic house party where everyone’s invited but no one’s behaving. It’s raw, it’s loud, and honestly? It’s kinda genius. Let’s get one thing straight—this isn’t polished stadium rock. This is gritty, unapologetic energy straight outta Japan. Tracks like “Kill Time” and “Beat The People” hit hard, fast, and leave you breathless. But if I had to pick two tracks that stuck in my brain like gum on a hot sidewalk, they’d be “Flying Diving” and “We Must Be A Dead Or Alive.” “Flying Diving” kicks off like someone spilled coffee on the guitarist during practice—he just goes nuts. The riffs are sharp enough to cut glass, and the drums sound like they’re trying to outrun a tornado. There’s something about the way the vocals scream over the chaos that makes you wanna punch the air or maybe even jump off a couch. (Disclaimer: don’t actually do that unless you hate your landlord.) You can tell these guys weren’t aiming for perfection—they were aiming for impact. And damn, did they nail it. Then there’s “We Must Be A Dead Or Alive,” which sounds exactly like its title suggests—a battle cry for survival wrapped in shredded guitar solos. The track has this relentless drive, like it’s daring you to keep up. Halfway through, there’s this weird little breakdown that shouldn’t work but totally does—it’s messy, unpredictable, and oddly satisfying, like finding money in an old jacket pocket. By the end, you’re not sure whether to cheer or collapse from exhaustion. The rest of the album follows suit: “Dolphin Kicks” brings some quirky charm, while “Fearful Spalow” leans into darker territory. Even softer moments like “La La Mie” feel slightly unhinged, as though the band couldn’t resist sneaking in a few jagged edges. Every song feels alive, like it could explode at any second—and sometimes it does. What really stands out about Geki Totsu is how unapologetically itself it is. In 1990, while other bands were chasing trends, Color doubled down on their own brand of reckless intensity. Sure, the production might feel a bit dated now, but that only adds to its charm. Listening to this album is like stepping into a time machine powered by adrenaline and bad decisions. So here’s the thing: If you’re looking for music that plays it safe, this ain’t it. But if you want something that grabs you by the collar and shakes you until your teeth rattle, give 激突 Geki Totsu a spin. Just don’t blame me if your neighbors start complaining—or if you find yourself humming “Flying Diving” at 3 AM. Oh, and fun fact: apparently, the band broke up shortly after this release. Makes sense—they probably burned through all their energy making this beast of an album. Guess we should thank them for going out with such a bang.

COLOR was formed in 1985 by Dynamite Tommy in Osaka. In the original line-up, Dynamite Tommy actually was the guitarist and there was a keyboardist. During 1986, all of the other original members of COLOR left the band. Afterwards Dynamite Tommy recruited some new members, two of them included Cindy and Tatsuya. Tatsuya only joined COLOR since Dynamite Tommy was impressed with his skills on the guitar. It has been noted that Tatsuya's guitar teacher was You Adachi of Dead End fame. After that, Dynamite Tommy switched from being the band's guitarist to the vocalist. COLOR went through two more line-ups in '86 and one in ' 87. In 1987, they released their first single, "Molt Grain". In 1988, Toshi and Marry joined the band. This ended up being their final and most well known line-up. During January 1988, COLOR released their Gekitotsu!! album, which was a huge success and sold as well as X Japan's Vanishing Vision. This is when the rivalry between X Japan and COLOR started. "East" X Japan had more of a metal sound while "West" COLOR had more of a punk sound. This is also where the whole "Extasty of the East vs Free-Will of the West" (ݱn¨¯¹¿·üॿnÕêü¦£ë) debate originated from. The ironic thing about the rivalry is that the members of X Japan did sing the chorus parts on many of the songs off of Gekitotsu!! Early 1989 saw the release of COLOR's Fools! Get Lucky! EP. After the success of that release, COLOR were signed to Crown Records (which later became Nippon Crown). At the end of 1989, Japan got the release of COLOR's first and only major album, Ask The Angels. Ask The Angels was originally written with Englsih lyrics and had a more violent theme. However, Crown Records wanted it to be more mainstream and made the band re-write some of the songs in Japanese and change a few lyrics in most of the songs. Also, Crown Records altered the stage persona of each member of Color to make them seem more normal. Hiroshi "Dynamite Tommy" Tomioka vocals (19851997, 2003, 2008, originally guitarist) Tatsuya Niimi guitar (19861997, 2003, 2008) Cindy guitar (19861997, 2003, 2008) Naotaka "Marry" Nakano bass (19881997) Toshi drums (19881997, 2003, 2008)
