Ljiljana Buttler And Mostar Sevdah Reunion - The Mother Of Gypsy Soul

Review by Judy Kusserow

The Mother of Gypsy Soul: A Raw, Heartfelt Journey Through Romani Folk If you’ve ever craved music that feels like it’s been pulled straight from the earth and stitched together with raw emotion, The Mother of Gypsy Soul by Ljiljana Buttler and Mostar Sevdah Reunion is your ticket. Released in 2002, this album isn’t just a collection of songs—it’s an experience. With its roots deep in Romani folk traditions, it blends the haunting beauty of Bosnia & Herzegovina with the polished production touch of the Netherlands. It’s messy, heartfelt, and unapologetically human. Let me tell ya, two tracks hit me so hard I couldn’t shake ‘em off: “Niska Banja” and “Djelem, Djelem Daje.” “Niska Banja” starts off slow, almost shy, like someone whispering secrets into the night. The accordion (courtesy of Mustafa Šantić) wraps around you like a warm blanket while Ljiljana’s voice—oh man, her voice—is pure magic. She doesn’t just sing; she tells stories, as if every word carries generations of pain and joy. By the time the clarinet kicks in, you’re not just listening anymore—you’re living it. This track sticks because it’s got this bittersweet vibe, like remembering something beautiful you can never get back. Then there’s “Djelem, Djelem Daje,” which feels like throwing caution to the wind and dancing under the stars. It’s upbeat but still has that ache in its core, y’know? The rhythm guitar from Sandi Durakovic locks in perfectly with Senad Trnovac’s percussion, creating this hypnotic groove that makes you wanna move even when you’re sitting still. And Ljiljana? She owns this one. Her delivery is fiery yet tender, like she’s daring you to feel everything she’s feeling right alongside her. What makes this album stand out is how real it feels. There are no flashy gimmicks or overproduced moments—just honest musicians pouring their hearts into each note. You can hear the soul in Kosta Latinović’s basslines, the grit in Nedo Kovačević’s violin solos, and the care Dragi Šestić put into mixing these tracks. It’s clear everyone involved was on the same page, aiming for authenticity over perfection. But here’s the thing—the album sneaks up on you. At first listen, it might seem simple, maybe even understated. But after a few spins, it digs its hooks in deep. These aren’t just songs—they’re memories, prayers, and dances all rolled into one. Listening to The Mother of Gypsy Soul feels like stumbling upon an old photograph album filled with faces you don’t recognize but somehow love anyway. And let’s be real—who would’ve thought a Dutch-Bosnian collaboration could sound so damn alive? That’s the kicker. Music doesn’t need borders or fancy labels to connect with us. Sometimes, all it needs is heart—and boy, does this album have plenty of that. So go ahead, give it a spin. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself humming “Niska Banja” at random hours or randomly busting out moves to “Djelem, Djelem Daje.” Trust me, it happens.
