Submersion - Momentum

Momentum by Submersion: A Sonic Journey That Sticks With You If you’re into electronic music that feels like it’s been stitched together from fragments of dreams and urban landscapes, Momentum by Submersion is worth your time. Released in 2014 under the artist’s own label (because who needs gatekeepers anyway?), this album dives deep into experimental vibes, ambient textures, and dub techno grooves. It’s not just an album—it’s more like a mood board for late-night musings or early-morning wanderings. The tracks here aren’t your typical playlist fodder; they’re atmospheric soundscapes that creep up on you when you least expect it. Take “Edgewater Train,” for instance. This one hits different. Imagine standing at a desolate train station at dawn, mist swirling around your feet, while faint echoes of machinery hum in the background. The track builds slowly—almost too slowly—but then BAM! A beat drops in like a heartbeat you didn’t know you were waiting for. It’s haunting but oddly comforting, like remembering something important you forgot years ago. Then there’s “Light Filtering Through.” Man, this track is pure vibe juice. Picture sunlight breaking through cracks in old blinds, casting weird shapes across a dusty room. The synths shimmer delicately, layered over field recordings that sound like distant birds or rustling leaves. You can practically smell the earthiness in this one. It’s the kind of song that makes you stop whatever you’re doing and just… listen. Like, really listen. No distractions. Just you and the moment. What sticks with me about Momentum isn’t just its technical brilliance—it’s how raw and unpolished it feels. There’s no glossing over imperfections here. Instead, those little quirks become part of the charm. Submersion lets sounds breathe, evolve, and sometimes even fall apart before pulling them back together again. It’s messy, beautiful, and kinda genius. And hey, maybe that’s what makes this album so memorable. In a world where everything has to be polished to death, Momentum reminds us that beauty often hides in the cracks. Or maybe I’m just overthinking it because I listened to “Discordance Congruence” three times in a row and now my brain feels scrambled. Either way, give this album a spin if you want music that lingers long after the last note fades. Final thought? Listening to Momentum feels like finding a mixtape in an abandoned car—it’s mysterious, unpredictable, and kinda magical. And honestly, we could all use a bit more magic these days.

Notes

  • "Momentum" was created using multiple improvised and layered audio segments each recorded in real-time. The album is nearly beatless, however there are percussive and rhythmic elements that appear throughout. The long track durations necessitated a digital release.
  • The final track captures voices, and (what are assumed to be) coyote howls at night as the animals passed through woods nearby. The sample was recorded while stargazing in Calhoun County, West Virginia.
