Alkemyst - Through Painful Lanes

Through Painful Lanes: A Metal Masterpiece That Packs a Punch If you’re into the heavier side of life, Through Painful Lanes by Alkemyst is one of those albums that’ll grab your soul and shake it until it screams for mercy. Released back in 2008, this beast of a record throws down some serious Progressive Metal vibes with dashes of Power Metal and Heavy Metal grit. It’s like they took all the best bits from Japan, Russia, France, and North America (Mexico included!) and mashed ‘em together into something wild. The lineup reads like a dream team for any metalhead—Roberto "Ramon" Messina on vocals, Denis Mellion holding down bass duties, Arnaud Gorbaty smashing drums, and guitar wizards Arnaud Ménard and Séverin Bonneville shredding their way through every track. Labels like Spiritual Beast, Irond, and Nightmare Records knew what they were doing when they got behind this album. You can tell these guys weren’t just phoning it in—they poured blood, sweat, and probably a few broken strings into this thing. Now let’s talk tracks because there’s plenty to sink your teeth into here. One standout has gotta be “Everlasting Farewell.” This song hits hard right outta the gate, with Ramon’s voice soaring over riffs so sharp they could cut glass. The lyrics hit close to home if you’ve ever had to say goodbye to someone or something you cared about deeply—it’s heavy but not cheesy, y’know? And then there’s “Mighty Power Fool,” which comes at ya like a freight train fueled by adrenaline. Between the killer drum fills and those face-melting solos, it’s impossible not to bang your head along. Bonus points for including a bonus version of this track; it feels like an encore after already blowing your mind once. Other bangers like “Enter the Carnival” and “Eagle Fly Free” keep the energy sky-high while tracks like “Restless Show” bring a darker edge to balance things out. Honestly, though, I keep coming back to “Everlasting Farewell” and “Mighty Power Fool” because they stick to your ribs like last night’s pizza. They’re the kind of songs that make you wanna crank up the volume till the neighbors complain—or join in. What really makes Through Painful Lanes special isn’t just its technical brilliance—it’s how raw and real it feels. Like, yeah, there are moments where it sounds polished, but most of the time it’s messy in the best possible way. It reminds me of why I fell in love with metal in the first place: it doesn’t hold back, it doesn’t apologize, and it sure as hell doesn’t care if you can’t handle it. So here’s the kicker—this album came out over a decade ago, yet it still slaps harder than half the stuff being released today. Maybe that says more about modern music than I intended, but hey, sometimes truth hurts. If you haven’t given Through Painful Lanes a spin yet, do yourself a favor and dive in. Just don’t blame me if your playlist never recovers.

  • Combining the Technical aspects of SYMPHONY X, SPIRAL ARCHETECT and DARKWATER, and Power aspects of KAMELOT, NIGHTWISH & ICED EARTH this French band was born ten years ago in the Alps, ALKEMYST worked hard and have strove in the obscurity of their rehearsal room to build their melodic fast paced progressive metal to it’s maturity. Noticed by professionals from their demo’s the band eventually signed an agreement with Nuclear Blast for their first album. A steady lineup is a strength of the band, they’ve not had a lineup change since 2000. Ramon Messina (Vocals) ex SECRET SPHERE) and Arnaud Gorbaty drums (ETERNAL FLIGHT) Denis Mellion (bass) Arnaud Ménard (guitar) and Séverin Bonneville (guitar).

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Through Painful Lanes* by Alkemyst is like a musical passport. It was released in 2008 across several countries—Japan, Russia, France, and even North America (including Mexico). That’s pretty wild for a heavy metal band! Oh, and get this—three different record labels were involved: Spiritual Beast, Irond, and Nightmare Records. So it’s got this global and collaborative vibe to it. Plus, with tracks like "Eagle Fly Free" and "The Beast Within," it’s packed with powerful riffs and soaring vocals. Not bad for an album born in multiple corners of the world!
