Love - Stand Out

Album Review: Stand Out by Love (1970) Alright, so here’s the deal with Stand Out by Love. This gem came out in 1970, smack dab in the middle of the UK rock scene, released under the Harvest label. It’s got this trippy, heady mix of Psychedelic Rock, Classic Rock, and even a dash of Acid Rock that just feels like a warm, fuzzy blanket for your ears—if that blanket was dipped in neon paint and thrown into a time machine. Arthurly, who wore multiple hats as both the arranger and producer, really left his mark on this one. Let’s dive into it, shall we? First up, “Doggone.” Man, this track is a trip. The opening riff grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. It’s gritty, raw, and kinda messy in the best way possible—like a rebellious teenager who refuses to comb their hair but somehow still looks cool. The guitar work here has this wild, untamed energy that screams late-night drives with the windows down. And the vocals? They’re dripping with attitude, like the singer’s daring you to look away. Honestly, it’s one of those songs that sticks in your head not because it’s perfect, but because it’s alive. You can feel the sweat and passion oozing out of every note. Then there’s the title track, “Stand Out.” If “Doggone” is the rowdy friend dragging you to a party, “Stand Out” is the quiet, mysterious one sitting in the corner, making you wonder what they’re all about. It’s more introspective, with these swirling layers of sound that feel like you’re floating through a dream. The melody builds slowly, almost hypnotically, until it explodes into this big, cathartic moment that just hits you right in the chest. It’s the kind of song that makes you stop whatever you’re doing and just listen. I remember hearing it for the first time and thinking, “Wow, this is what music is supposed to feel like.” What’s wild about Stand Out is how it straddles that line between chaos and control. It’s not polished to a shine like some of the other albums from the era, and honestly, that’s what makes it special. It feels human. You can tell these guys were just messing around in the studio, letting the music take them where it wanted to go. Arthurly deserves props for keeping that spirit intact instead of trying to rein it in too much. So yeah, if you’re into rock that’s a little rough around the edges but still packs a punch, Stand Out is worth a spin. It’s the kind of album that reminds you why people fell in love with rock ‘n’ roll in the first place. Oh, and fun fact—apparently, the band broke up shortly after this album dropped. Makes you wonder if they burned too bright, too fast, huh? Funny how art works like that sometimes.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know? The 1970 album *Stand Out* by Love is a hidden gem in the world of psychedelic rock. Released on the iconic UK label Harvest, it blends classic and acid rock styles. What’s unique is that Arthurly, who produced the album, also arranged all the tracks. It includes just two songs—"Doggone" and the title track "Stand Out." Not your typical album setup, but it's got this raw, experimental vibe that fans of the genre would totally dig.

I prefer the shortened version. The percussion solo is a bit much!
For those who remember the Whiskey on Sunset in 60’s; Arthurly wrote the best lyrics ever! These guys now all gone were 2nd story guys ! Hit your bong and listen to “Forever Changes” album. An all time highly rated classic! I loved these guys!!!

Have part of a copy of the original vinyl, which was a double album/gate-fold affair. Only the second disc is present but it contains this amazing song with a great drum solo, happy to find it on Youtube!

Great song....and the drum solo is just the funky icing on the cake. I can hear the Clyde Stubblefield influences there. Little bit of Cold Sweat.
Sublime.

I still have this vinyl and many others. This was 'off the hook' back in the day even though many people don't think much of the technical aspect of it in today's context.
