Review by Kenneth Jones

Avalon EP by Avalon: A Genre-Defying, Spiritually Charged Rollercoaster You Didn’t Know You Needed Let’s get one thing straight—this album is a wild ride. Like, imagine if someone threw a Christian rock band, an EDM festival, and your grandma’s gospel choir into a blender. That’s Avalon EP. Released in 2017 across Germany, the USA, and Canada under labels Fog Area Limited and Sparrow Records, this project doesn’t just dabble in genres; it cannonballs into them. Religious vibes? Check. Funky beats that’ll make you wanna strut down the street like you own it? Double check. Hard trance drops that feel like they were ripped straight out of a Berlin club? Oh yeah. Now, before we dive deeper, let me say this: trying to describe every track here would be like summarizing War & Peace after two cups of coffee—it’s impossible, messy, and probably not worth it. Instead, I’ll focus on two standout tracks that stuck with me for all the right (and slightly weird) reasons. First up, “Here to Deliver.” This song hits different. It starts off soft, almost whispery, like someone sneaking up behind you at church to hand you a hymnal. But then—BOOM—the beat kicks in, and suddenly you’re not sure whether to raise your hands in praise or bust out some choreography from TikTok. The vocals are smooth as butter on warm toast, but there’s also this electric energy that makes you wanna shout “HALLELUJAH” while simultaneously spinning around the room. What really got me was how effortlessly it blends contemporary Christian themes with pop sensibilities. By the end, I wasn’t even mad when my cat knocked over my coffee cup because, hey, Jesus delivered me…from caring too much about spilled caffeine. Then there’s “Tap Tap (DJ Julio Remix).” If you’ve ever wondered what happens when gospel meets hard trance, wonder no more. This remix slaps harder than your uncle telling dad jokes at Thanksgiving dinner. The original version of “Tap Tap” already had soulful vibes, but DJ Julio takes it to another dimension entirely. Imagine being at a rave where everyone’s wearing glow sticks and rosaries. Sounds chaotic? Maybe. But somehow, it works. The drop caught me so off guard that I nearly fell off my chair—and trust me, that hasn’t happened since I tried yoga during lockdown. What strikes me most about this album is its audacity. Who else could pull off combining Contemporary R&B with Hard Trance and still have it sound cohesive? Sure, some tracks lean heavier toward traditional worship music, while others veer dangerously close to experimental electronica territory—but isn’t life itself kind of like that? Messy yet beautiful, unpredictable yet meaningful? In conclusion, Avalon EP isn’t perfect. Some songs might leave you scratching your head (“Eleven Asako,” anyone?), and others will have you hitting replay faster than you can say “Hallelujah.” But maybe that’s the point. In a world obsessed with fitting neatly into boxes, Avalon reminds us that sometimes the best art comes from breaking those boxes apart. So grab your headphones, crank up the volume, and prepare yourself for a musical journey that feels less like listening to an album and more like surviving a spiritual supernova. P.S. If anyone finds out what “Incandescencia” actually means, hit me up. Google gave me nothing but existential dread.
