Album Review: Jungle Kitchen by LAS – A Sonic Adventure from New Zealand Released in 2018 under the Blacklist label, Jungle Kitchen by LAS is a wild ride through experimental dance and electronic vibes with a dash of dubstep thrown in for good measure. Hailing from New Zealand, LAS delivers an album that feels like wandering into an uncharted corner of a neon-lit jungle—chaotic yet strangely inviting. The record’s genre-blurring soundscapes make it both intriguing and hard to pin down, which is exactly what makes it memorable. Let’s dive into two standout tracks. First up, “Pocosink.” This track grabs you by the ears right away with its hypnotic beats and eerie undertones. It's one of those songs where you’re not sure if you should dance or just sit there staring blankly at the wall while your brain tries to process what’s happening. The production has this raw edge to it, almost as if they recorded it live in some abandoned warehouse deep in the bush. And then there’s Commodo’s remix of “Pocosink,” which flips the original on its head. Where the first version feels dark and brooding, the remix injects a swaggering bassline that practically begs you to move. You can tell Commodo had fun tearing this one apart and rebuilding it into something fresh but equally compelling. The title track, “Jungle Kitchen,” lives up to its name—it’s chaotic, layered, and full of surprises. Imagine being stuck in a rainforest where every animal is trying to outdo each other with their calls, except here, the animals are synths and drum machines. There’s so much going on, but somehow it all works together without feeling overwhelming. Every time I listen, I catch something new—a glitchy beat here, a distant echo there—and it keeps me coming back for more. What sets Jungle Kitchen apart isn’t just its innovative sound; it’s how unapologetically weird it is. In a world where so much music feels formulaic, LAS takes risks, even if it means things get messy sometimes. Sure, not every moment lands perfectly, but when it does, it hits hard. Here’s the thing about this album—it doesn’t try to be anything other than itself. That kind of authenticity is rare these days. Listening to Jungle Kitchen feels like stepping into someone else’s dream (or maybe nightmare), and honestly? I kinda loved it. Who knew a bunch of Kiwis could cook up something this wild?
