Review by Fernanda Barros

Alright, let’s dive into this Vivaldi album, Concertos, by The Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Sir Neville Marriner, and Iona Brown. Released back in 1983 on the Serenata/Argo Studios label, it’s a proper deep-dive into Baroque classical music—no frills, just pure musicianship. And hey, when you’ve got Antonio Vivaldi as the composer? You know you’re in for some serious ear candy. First off, let me say that this isn’t your “throw-on-in-the-background” kind of record. Nope, it demands attention. One track that really stuck with me is Concerto For Violin In D Minor, Op 4 No 8 RV 249. It’s got this dramatic flair right from the start, like someone whispering secrets to you but also shouting at the same time. The interplay between the violins feels almost playful, like they’re having a little musical argument or gossip session. I mean, how does Vivaldi make strings sound so alive? It’s wild. Every note has this energy that makes you sit up straighter, even if you didn’t realize you were slouching. Then there’s Concerto For 2 Trumpets In C Major, RV 537. Oh man, this one’s a banger. Those trumpets hit you right away, bold and brassy, like they’re announcing royalty walking into a room. There’s something about the way these instruments bounce off each other—it’s not just technical skill; it’s fun. Like, I could totally imagine hearing this during an epic movie scene where the hero strides through castle doors ready to take on the world. Or maybe while eating a really fancy sandwich? Either way, it’s memorable. The performances here are tight. Iona Brown and Sir Neville Marriner clearly knew what they were doing, bringing out all the textures in Vivaldi’s compositions without overdoing it. It’s polished but not stiff—you can tell everyone involved actually felt the music instead of just playing it because they had to. That balance makes the whole thing feel fresh, even though these pieces are centuries old. One random thought I had while listening: why don’t we hear more Baroque stuff in everyday life? Like, wouldn’t it be cool if car commercials used tracks like this instead of whatever pop remixes they shove down our throats? Just saying. Anyway, wrapping this up—this album reminds me how timeless good music really is. Whether you’re a hardcore classical nerd or just someone who appreciates a well-crafted tune, Concertos delivers. Honestly, after spinning this, I kinda wanna grab a cello and learn how to play…or at least pretend I can.

Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher and cleric. Born March 4, 1678, Sestiere di San Marco, Repùblica Vèneta, Italy. Died July 28, 1741, Kärntnertor, Vienna, Austria. He is recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe. He is known mainly for composing many instrumental concertos, for the violin and a variety of other instruments, as well as sacred choral works and more than forty operas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as "The Four Seasons". Vivaldi's career as a violinist and composer was almost inevitable. His father was Giovanni Battista Vivaldi, a founder of the Sovvegno dei musicisti di Santa Cecilia, an early musician's collective, who's President was the Baroque operatic composer and tutor Giovanni Legrenzi. As a youth, touring and performing around Venice in accompaniment on the violin with his father, he is likely to have been influenced by Legrenzi who had become maestro di cappella at St. Mark's Basilica in 1681. A redhead like his father, Vivaldi took up the course of attaining a priesthood in 1693 and became ordained in 1703, referred to by those around him as "Il Prete Rosso" because of his red hair. By late 1703 he was unable to maintain his practice in the priesthood due to ill health and sought employment as a tutor of music, retaining his reverential title. By 1704 he worked as maestro of violin in Venice at the orphanage of the Devout Hospital of Mercy, an institution known as Conservatorio dell'Ospedale della Pietà, providing shelter to orphaned and abandoned children. Here the boys were taught a trade, whilst the girls were given a musical education. The talented were selected for the conservatory's orchestra & choir, which gained high regard both in Venice and abroad. Vivaldi used this period to write the majority of his concertos, cantatas and arias. The institute provided an ideal environment for Vivaldi to explore the avenues of the ritornello form. The first of his works were published in 1705, a second Opus in 1709. His third Opus was published in Amsterdam in 1711 and gained him enthusiastic attention throughout Europe followed by a fourth Opus in 1714. He became Musical Director of the Pietà's institute in 1716 and was contracted to provide two concerti a month for the orchestra. Papers from the Pietà's history show that Vivaldi produced 140 concerti between 1723 and 1733. In 1714 Vivaldi took on the role of impresario of the theater Sant'Angelo in Venice, presenting "Orlando finto pazzo

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know? The album *Concertos* by Vivaldi, performed by The Academy of St Martin in the Fields, features a stunning collection of Baroque masterpieces. One standout track is the *Concerto for 4 Violins in B Minor*, a piece so intricate it feels like a musical conversation. It’s wild to think this recording came out in 1983, centuries after Vivaldi composed it. The UK-based ensemble, led by Sir Neville Marriner, brought these works back to life with such precision.
