Review by Bob Taylor

Berlin 20583 Metropol Loft 4Symphonie: A Sonic Odyssey by Glenn Branca Glenn Branca’s Berlin 20583 Metropol Loft 4Symphonie, released in 1983 under the Not On Label imprint, is an audacious plunge into experimental rock and electronic music. Hailing from Germany—a hub for avant-garde innovation—this album feels like a fever dream of dissonance and structure colliding. It's not your typical listen; it demands attention, almost as if Branca himself dared you to keep up. One track that sticks with me is the enigmatic Untitled. I mean, how do you even begin to describe something so raw yet meticulously crafted? The piece opens with this wall of sound—layers of guitars and synths creating a dense, almost oppressive atmosphere. But just when you think it’s all noise, these fleeting moments of melody break through, sharp and unexpected. You’re left wondering whether you should feel uneasy or exhilarated. Honestly, it’s kind of genius. Another standout is Track 2 (assuming there’s one—I couldn’t find specific titles beyond Untitled). This one leans heavier into the electronic side, pulsating with industrial beats that feel mechanical but oddly alive. There’s a point where the rhythm shifts abruptly, throwing you off balance, and suddenly you realize: this isn’t background music. It’s more like a conversation, albeit one where Branca does most of the talking. And yeah, he has a lot to say. What makes this album unforgettable isn’t just its technical brilliance—it’s the way it challenges you. Listening to Berlin 20583 Metropol Loft 4Symphonie feels less like entertainment and more like participation in some strange ritual. By the end, you’re not sure if you’ve been enlightened or just thoroughly confused. Maybe both? Here’s the kicker: despite being nearly 40 years old, this record still sounds ahead of its time. Or maybe we’re just catching up to Glenn Branca. Either way, it’s a trip worth taking—even if you stumble out the other side scratching your head.

Glenn Branca (October 6, 1948, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA - d. May 13th, 2018) was an American composer who studied performing arts at Emerson College in Boston. After graduation, he formed two bands - Theoretical Girls in 1977 with Jeffrey Lohn, and later, The Static. In the eighties, his compositions for the Glenn Branca Ensemble included the several symphonies for which he was best known. Branca's compositions centered around multiple guitars - four or more, heavily amplified - augmented by a rock-based rhythm section of drums and bass. In later works, the composer began adding other instruments, including mallet guitar, keyboards, and occasionally a second drummer. Branca's minimalist compositions frequently required unusual guitar tunings.
