The 21st Century - Remember The Rain

Review by MB Sch

Remember The Rain: A Soulful Time Capsule from 1974 Man, if you’re into that warm, buttery soul sound with just a sprinkle of funk and pop magic, Remember The Rain by The 21st Century is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Released in ‘74 via RCA and Golden Tone Records, it’s got this raw charm that feels like flipping through an old photo album—slightly faded but full of heart. And yeah, Marvin Smith was pulling double duty here as both producer and songwriter, which explains why the whole thing feels so cohesive. Now, let me tell you about two tracks that stuck with me. First off, there’s the title track, “Remember The Rain.” It opens with this delicate piano melody, soft enough to make your shoulders drop, and then BAM—the vocals hit, smooth as honey drizzled over grits. There's something haunting yet comforting about the lyrics; it’s like remembering a love you lost but knowing deep down it made you who you are today. You can hear D. Leake, D. Blumberg, and M. Smith working their arrangement magic, layering strings and horns so subtly you almost don’t notice until they’re wrapping around you like a hug. Honestly, I found myself humming this for days after hearing it. Then there’s another gem—I won’t name it because part of the fun is discovering these moments yourself—but damn, it’s got this slow-burning ballad energy that hits different late at night. Like, when everyone else is asleep and you’re sitting by the window staring at the moon? That kind of vibe. The way the singer stretches out certain words gives me goosebumps every time. It’s not flashy or trying too hard—it just is, y’know? What gets me most about this record is how unapologetically human it feels. These aren’t perfect studio performances scrubbed clean of personality. Instead, you get cracks in voices, little imperfections that remind you real people poured their souls into this project. Funny thing though—listening to this album kinda makes me wish I had lived in the ‘70s, even though I’d probs hate the fashion (seriously, what was up with those bell-bottoms?). But hey, maybe that’s the point. Remember The Rain doesn’t just take you back to 1974; it reminds you to find beauty in life’s storms, whether you lived through them or not. Oh, and one last random thought: whoever decided to pair this album with golden-era vinyl pressing knew what they were doing. This baby sounds amazing on a turntable. Just sayin’.

Not sure what happened to my earlier post, but, for those looking to add this to your music library, look for an compilation album called Soulful Thangs, Volume 1. On it, you'll also find the classic response song, Love Jones '75, by the Imaginations. The latter is the female response to the male classic, Love Jones, by the Brighter Side of Darkness. This one you can find on another compilation album called "Love Jones, The Best of Funk Essentials Ballads, Volume 2.
These are the classic sounds of my youth! To those new to it, "Welcome" to the classic soul sounds of the '70s!
