Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27 & Sonata No. 11: A Timeless Aussie Gem (1966) Alright, let’s dive into this classic slice of Mozart magic—a record that feels like sipping fine wine while wearing socks with holes in them. It’s elegant yet oddly relatable. Released in 1966 by the World Record Club in Australia, it features Wilhelm Backhaus tickling the ivories on piano, backed up by none other than the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Karl Böhm’s baton. Fancy? You bet. But let’s not get too highfalutin here—this album is packed with moments that make you go “huh, THAT’S why Mozart’s still a big deal.” First off, we’ve got Concerto No. 27 in B Flat Major (K.595). If you’re looking for something to soothe your soul after a rough day at work or just zoning out during laundry folding, this track has your back. The opening movement sneaks up on you like a polite house cat—it doesn’t demand attention but somehow grabs it anyway. Backhaus plays with such effortless grace that you almost forget how hard this stuff must be to pull off. And then there’s that cadenza in the final Allegro. Whew! Original and dazzling, it’s like Mozart himself whispered some secrets directly into Backhaus’ fingers. This isn’t just music; it’s storytelling without words, painting pictures of sunlit gardens and people wearing powdered wigs who probably had better posture than us. Now, flip over to Sonata No. 11 in A Major (K.331), specifically the third movement—Alla Turca. Oh man, if this one doesn’t stick in your brain for days, I’ll eat my proverbial hat. It’s jaunty, it’s playful, and honestly? It sounds like Mozart decided to write a banger for an 18th-century Turkish coffee shop playlist. The rhythm pops, the melody bounces around like a caffeinated squirrel, and every time I hear it, I half-expect someone to burst into song about selling exotic spices. Backhaus nails it—he keeps things light but never loses sight of the piece’s quirky charm. You can practically hear him smirking as he plays. What makes this album stand out isn’t just the technical brilliance (though, yeah, these musicians could crush it). It’s the vibe. Listening to this feels less like attending a formal concert and more like eavesdropping on a genius noodling around late at night when no one else is awake. Donald Mitchell’s liner notes are worth a read too—they’re nerdy enough to satisfy classical buffs but not so dense they’ll send you running for the dictionary. So, what’s the takeaway? Well, this record reminds me that great art doesn’t need fireworks to blow your mind. Sometimes all it takes is a dude from centuries ago writing tunes that still sound fresh today. Also, now I kinda want to figure out where I can find powdered wigs online because apparently, they were all the rage back then. Final thought: If Mozart were alive today, he’d probably be dropping beats on SoundCloud and arguing with trolls in YouTube comments. Lucky for us, we’ve got this gem instead.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s an interesting fact: Wilhelm Backhaus, the pianist behind this 1966 recording of Mozart's *Piano Concerto No. 27* and *Sonata No. 11*, was one of the first classical musicians to embrace early recording technology. He made his first recordings way back in 1909, long before this album was released in Australia. It’s wild to think that someone who started in the era of wax cylinders ended up creating timeless performances like this with the Vienna Philharmonic. You can hear his decades of experience in every note.

This is what happens when you have audio engineers with ears! (A very special year in my existential journey, Mozart/Backhaus not withstanding)

Jahrhundert!

'Longing for spring'
May, sweet May, and
Turn the tree green again.
And little violets
Smoke for me in this stream!
Mozart was looking forward to his last spring. In his last piano concerto, he left us with the most powerful message.
Karl Bohm and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performed as beautifully as possible with Great Pianist W. Backhaus! Thanks, David!

Stunning sound!! This is a beautiful performance by the brilliant Backhaus and the renown VPO under the astute direction of Karl Bohm. The three constitute one entity so attuned they are. The balance is perfect!! The fine musicianship evidenced here is rare. This recording is an international treasure. My pleasure in listening to the fine instrumentalists of the orchestra is equal to my respect for the artistic and inventive soloist. His eloquent phrasing and dynamic fervor, complemented by nuanced volume, give this performance polish and sophistication. Bravo to all involved, with a special acknowledgment to the genius, Mozart.
