Album Review: False Rasta by Jacob Miller – A Roots Reggae Gem That Hits Like a Bassline Alright, let’s talk about False Rasta, the 2000 reggae masterpiece from Jacob Miller. Yeah, you heard me right—2000. This album dropped decades after Miller’s untimely death in 1980, but thanks to some studio wizardry and the magic hands of producer Augustus “A. Pablo” Thompson, it feels as alive as ever. If you’re into roots reggae or dub, this is basically required listening. Jamaica’s soulful vibes? Check. Deep basslines that rattle your chest? Double check. Now, before we dive in, I gotta say—the tracklist here is short but mighty. It’s like those tiny tacos that somehow fill you up because they’re just that good. The standout for me has to be the titular track, “False Rasta.” Man, this tune hits different. With its hypnotic rhythm and Miller’s smooth-as-butter vocals, it's impossible not to nod along. There’s something raw and unfiltered about how he delivers those lyrics—it’s less preaching, more storytelling over a killer groove. You feel like you’re sitting fireside with him, soaking up wisdom while passing around an imaginary spliff. Then there’s “False Rasta (Version),” which flips the original into a dub-heavy dreamscape. Producer A. Pablo really flexes his muscles on this one, stripping things down and letting the echoes do the talking. It’s like watching someone take apart a clock and then rebuild it into a spaceship. Same parts, totally new vibe. Honestly, if I could live inside a song, this would be high on my list. Dub heads will lose their minds over the layers of reverb and delay—it’s audio gold. The other tracks are solid too, though “Untitled” leaves you guessing (shocker). Is it unfinished? Intentionally mysterious? Who knows, but it adds to the charm. And props to labels Rockers, Thompson Sound, and Rockers International for keeping Miller’s legacy alive. These guys didn’t just slap together old recordings—they curated a project that honors his spirit. So yeah, False Rasta isn’t perfect. Some might call it uneven, others might wish for more tracks. But honestly? That misses the point. This album is a time capsule, a love letter to Jacob Miller’s artistry, and proof that great music doesn’t expire. Listening to it feels like finding an old mixtape in your car’s glove compartment—it’s nostalgic yet fresh, familiar yet surprising. And hey, here’s a random thought to leave you with: If Jacob Miller were alive today, I bet he’d have TikTok blowing up with snippets of “False Rasta.” Can you imagine the dance challenges? Pure chaos. Rest easy, legend—you still got us moving.
