Wells Cathedral Choir And String Ensemble From Wells Cathedral School - Music From Wells Cathedral

Review by Steven Rosenberg

Alright, let’s dive into Music From Wells Cathedral. This 1980 gem by the Wells Cathedral Choir and String Ensemble (yep, straight outta the UK) is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. It’s tagged under classical music, but don’t let that scare you off if you’re not usually into it—this record has soul. And when I say soul, I mean it in that “whoa, this feels ancient yet totally alive” kind of way. The lineup of tracks is heavy on choral goodness, with a dash of religious vibes—but trust me, it’s not preachy; it’s more like a warm hug for your ears. The album kicks off with "Lauds," which sets the tone right away. You’ve got these soaring harmonies backed by strings so delicate they feel like whispers. Honestly? If Lauds doesn’t give you goosebumps, check your pulse. Then there’s “Cantate Domino,” which hits different because it feels celebratory without being over-the-top flashy. It’s like someone took joy and turned it into sound. The choir nails it here, blending their voices perfectly, while Robin Williams (not THAT Robin Williams—he plays oboe!) adds just enough spice to keep things interesting. There’s something about how smooth the transitions are between sections—it pulls you in before you even realize it. The rest of the album keeps the bar high too. Tracks like “Adoramus Te, Christe” hit hard emotionally, almost as if the singers are standing right next to you. Meanwhile, pieces like “Concerto In D Major For Oboe And Strings” bring a nice change of pace, showing off what the string ensemble can really do. But honestly? What sticks with me most isn’t any single song—it’s the overall vibe. Listening to this feels like stepping inside an old cathedral where time slows down and everything echoes just right. Here’s the kicker though: despite its age (hello, 1980!), this album still holds up today. Maybe it’s the raw talent of everyone involved, or maybe it’s the fact that some sounds never go out of style. Either way, Music From Wells Cathedral deserves a spot in your playlist if you’re looking for something calming yet powerful. Oh—and here’s the random thought I’ll leave you with: listening to this made me wonder what it must’ve been like to attend one of these recordings live. Did people accidentally cough during the quiet bits? Or did they all magically hold their breath until the final note? Food for thought.
