Album Review: East Of The Wall Year Of No Light Rosetta by Rosetta, Year Of No Light, East Of The Wall Alright, let’s talk about this wild ride of an album. Released in 2010 on Denovali Records (shoutout to Vega Vinyl too), this thing is like a musical Frankenstein—part shoegaze, part math rock, with dashes of hardcore, post-metal, doom metal, and experimental chaos all stitched together. It’s heavy as hell but also kinda beautiful in its own messed-up way. And yeah, it’s German. You can almost smell the industrial vibes. First off, the collaboration between Rosetta, Year Of No Light, and East Of The Wall already sets high expectations. These bands are no strangers to pushing boundaries, so when they team up, you know you’re in for something… well, not normal. Let’s break it down. Tracks That Stick Okay, so there’s this track called “Metanoia.” Man, this one hits different. Starts off slow and brooding, like you’re walking through fog or some kinda abandoned factory. Then BAM—it explodes into this wall of sound that just crushes you. The guitars are fuzzy as heck, and the drums feel like they’re punching you in the chest. But what makes it stick? I think it’s how unpredictable it feels. Just when you think it’s gonna go full-on doom mode, it flips into these weird time signatures that make your brain hurt—in a good way. It’s like listening to controlled chaos. Love it. Then there’s their cover of “Homesick” by The Cure. Who would’ve thought these dudes could pull off a Cure cover? They take this melancholy goth classic and turn it into a sludgy, distorted beast. Like imagine Robert Smith hanging out at a metal show—he’d probably dig it. What sticks with me here is how they keep the soul of the original but add layers of grit and distortion. It’s haunting but also kinda badass. You can tell they respect the source material while still making it their own. Other Stuff Worth Mentioning The Scrumbrella trilogy—yeah, you read that right, three versions of the same song—isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it shows how experimental these guys were willing to get. Each version has its own vibe, from grimy (“Slit”) to downright filthy (“Mud Button”). Honestly, it’s a bit much, but hey, props for creativity. And then there’s “Cimmeria,” which closes things out with this epic, sprawling soundscape. Feels like the soundtrack to the end of the world—or maybe the beginning of a new one. Either way, it leaves you feeling unsettled but kinda hopeful? Weird combo, but it works. Final Thoughts This album doesn’t try to be easy listening, and honestly, that’s why it’s awesome. It’s messy, loud, and unapologetically weird, but it’s got heart. If you’re into stuff that challenges you instead of spoon-feeding catchy hooks, give this a spin. Just don’t expect to understand it all on the first listen. Oh, and random thought: if this album was a person, it’d probably be that artsy friend who only listens to obscure bands and wears black turtlenecks everywhere. You know the type.

Hey hey!

Just one more and I'll walk away
All the everything you win
Turns to nothing today

And I forget how to move
When my mouth is this dry
And my eyes are bursting hearts
In a blood-stained sky

Oh it was sweet, it was wild
And oh how we...
I trembled, stuck in honey
Honey cling to me...

So just one more
Just one more go
Inspire in me the desire in me
To never go home

Oh just one more
And I'll walk away
All the everything you win
Turns to nothing today

So just one more
Just one more go
Inspire in me the desire in me
To never go home

I’m so sorry Denisse M Rudolph. You’re such an awesome person who merely seeked friendship and kindness and I was too fucking retarded to realize that! Assuming I would be crushed on and it would hinder my life, I got an epic ass whipping from Karma.
I owe you so much more than an apology, Dennise and It Shall Come To Pass!
Darkly beautiful. Ill need to contemplate this one awhile. Covering the cure and keeping it real to who you are is very challenging. I have never heard this band before but i can tell they have very sharp edges. The cure and by nature can be abrasive look at the album kiss me kiss me kiss me and pornography both darker by far than disintegration. This cover could stand on its own. It both honors smith and shows they can interpret his music effectively. I loved that twist in there of long echos and the dying out of the vocals, you can feel the screams of desire to return to that passionate love just out of reach. Smith has such a way with lyrics, i was so inspired by them in my own writings from the mid 80s on. Gifted beyond a simple understanding of notes and words, smith to me is the pinnacle of the perfect colossal storm in music and i will always be running for cover screaming more more more???!!!!!!

The intro all the way to the vocals and up until the the part where it picks up with the screaming is just beautiful. The rest is a great crescendo to the rest of the piece. Always happy I came across these guys.

I give them credit for selecting a song far too often overlooked, but the guttural voice is terrible and doesn't fit this beautiful song.
