Album Review: Freefall by Metrik If you’re into electronic music with a twist of house vibes, Freefall by Metrik is one you don’t wanna sleep on. Released back in 2012 under the UK-based Viper Recordings, this album dives deep into dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass while keeping things fresh and unpredictable. It’s not just another drop-heavy record; it’s got layers that stick with you long after the beat fades. The title track, Freefall, kicks things off strong. Right from the start, it pulls you in with its punchy synths and rolling basslines. The energy feels like falling through clouds—chaotic yet oddly freeing. What makes it unforgettable? Probably Reija Lee’s vocals. They add this haunting, ethereal vibe to the mix, making the track feel cinematic. You can almost picture yourself in some neon-lit cityscape video game level. And yeah, there’s an instrumental version too if you’re more into raw beats than singing—but honestly, the original steals the show here. Another standout is Drift. This one’s got a slower build but packs a wallop when it hits. It’s less about flashy drops and more about creating atmosphere. Listening to it feels like cruising down a foggy highway at night—smooth, mysterious, and kinda hypnotic. The production quality shines here, with crisp drums and lush pads blending seamlessly. For me, this track sticks because it’s understated yet powerful, proving that Metrik knows how to craft tension without overdoing it. Oh, and let’s not forget the remixes. The xKore Remix of Freefall flips the script entirely, turning the original into something darker and heavier. It’s cool to hear how versatile the track can be, though purists might prefer the OG version. Either way, it adds replay value for sure. Looking back, Freefall isn’t perfect—it leans heavily on certain tropes of its genre, which might leave some listeners wanting more innovation. But hey, sometimes sticking to what works pays off. The album feels like a snapshot of where UK electronic music was in 2012: bold, experimental, but still grounded in solid grooves. Here’s the unexpected part: listening to this now feels nostalgic AF. Not because I lived through 2012 (I mean, I did), but because it reminds me of a time when dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass weren’t oversaturated. Back then, albums like Freefall felt like little worlds waiting to be explored. So yeah, give it a spin. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find yourself freefalling into a rabbit hole of Metrik bangers.
