Review by Robb Sutton

Jeromes Dream – Split 5 with Book Of Dead Names: A Raw, Unfiltered Punch to the Gut Man, if you’re looking for something that’ll leave a mark on your soul, Jeromes Dream’s side of Split 5 is where it’s at. This chaotic little gem came out in ‘99, courtesy of Witching Hour, and holy crap does it sound like it was recorded in the eye of a tornado. It’s hardcore punk meets noise-laden emo chaos, all wrapped up in this raw, unpolished package that feels more like an open wound than an album. Let me tell you about "How To Write An Obituary For Your Teenager." Damn. Just... damn. That track hits hard right from the jump. The vocals are basically screaming into the void while the guitars churn out these jagged riffs that feel like they’re tearing through your speakers. What sticks with me isn’t just how loud or abrasive it is—it’s the way it makes you feel like you’re intruding on someone’s private grief. Like, there’s no filter here. No attempt to make it pretty or palatable. And honestly? That’s what makes it unforgettable. By the time those last screeching notes fade out, you’re left staring into space wondering if you should cry or punch a wall. Then there’s "The Big Fuck You," which might as well be titled “How to Destroy Everything in Under Two Minutes.” This one’s shorter but packs such a visceral punch that I still can’t get over it. The drums sound like they’re collapsing under their own weight, and the vocals? They’re unhinged in the best possible way—like someone flipping over tables and smashing windows but somehow making art out of it. Every time I hear it, I think about how music doesn’t need to be polished or perfect to hit home. Sometimes, it just needs to bleed. What really gets me about this split is how messy it feels—not sloppy messy, but human messy. These guys weren’t trying to impress anyone; they were just letting it all spill out onto tape. Experimental? Sure. Noise-heavy? Absolutely. But beneath all the chaos, there’s this weird kind of honesty that cuts deeper than anything slick or radio-friendly ever could. And hey, fun fact: listening to this album makes me want to go break stuff—but only in the most cathartic, therapeutic way possible. Not sure if that’s a ringing endorsement or a warning label, but either way, give it a spin. Just don’t say I didn’t warn ya when your neighbors start complaining.

Jeromes Dream was a Connecticut screamo/hardcore band, active from 1997 to 2001. The band had a unique vocal style - singer Jeff Smith opted not to use a microphone while performing live, instead screaming unamplified at the top of his lungs. The band was known for playing very short sets, usually no longer than 10 minutes. According to Smith, they thought 10 minutes was all they needed to get their point across. Members: Jeff Smith - Bass/Vocals Nick Antonopulous - Guitar Erik Ratensperger - Drums
