Frankie Bones & Adam X - Cross Bones

Cross Bones by Frankie Bones & Adam X: A Techno Time Capsule from 1991 Alright, let’s talk about Cross Bones. If you’re into raw, unfiltered techno with a vibe that punches you in the gut and drags you straight to some sweaty underground rave in Paris circa '91, this album is your jam. Released on Rave Age Records (France, baby!), it’s one of those records where every track feels like it has a heartbeat—mechanical but alive, y’know? And shoutout to Damon Wild for programming and engineering; dude clearly had his finger on the pulse. Now, I gotta zoom in on two tracks here because they stuck with me long after the needle lifted off the vinyl. First up: “Brainstopper.” Man, this tune is an absolute head-spinner. It opens with these eerie, glitchy synths that feel like someone hacking into your brainwaves. Then BAM—the beat drops, all jagged edges and relentless energy. You can almost picture Frankie Bones and Adam X cackling maniacally as they stitched this monster together. It’s not just music—it’s a full-on sensory assault. Perfect for losing yourself in a dark room full of strobes and strangers who somehow become best friends by sunrise. Then there’s “Hotter Than Hell,” which might as well be renamed “The Track That Won’t Quit.” This thing is pure fire, no cap. The bassline throbs like a second heartbeat, while the hi-hats sizzle so sharp you could cut yourself dancing too hard. There’s something hypnotic about how the layers build and fall apart, only to come back stronger. Every time I hear it, I’m reminded why techno isn’t just background noise—it’s a lifestyle. Like, yeah, you could listen to this at home, but it really belongs blasting through massive speakers somewhere dank and chaotic. And props to them for keeping things tight across the board. Tracks like “Gettin’ High” and “Waitin’ 4 My Shell 2 Crack” keep the momentum rolling without overstaying their welcome. These guys weren’t messing around—they made sure each song hit hard and left you wanting more. Reflecting on Cross Bones, it strikes me how ahead of its time this record was. In 1991, most people were still figuring out what techno even was, yet Frankie Bones and Adam X were already crafting bangers that sound fresher today than half the stuff coming out now. Maybe that’s the magic of true pioneers—they don’t chase trends; they create ‘em. Oh, and fun fact: listening to this album makes me wanna dig up old rave flyers and start hoarding vintage Roland gear. Not saying I will, but...don’t be surprised if my next garage sale haul looks suspiciously DJ-themed.

Big break in his career was when he became a DJ at "Energy" (The Eclipse) raves in the UK. "Frankie Bones is the most visible DJ and taste-maker of New York's independent techno scene during the 1980s and '90s, both through his nation-trotting club appearances and frenetic mix-album schedule (which approaches three per year). After five years of DJ appearances, Bones began producing as well in 1987, with as Musto & Bones. Their stellar remixes and tracks for Nu Groove Records made it the home of some of New York's hottest contemporary productions. In 1990, the pair released an album for RCA named The Future Is Ours, and the single "All I Want to Do Is Get Away" became a huge hit on dancefloors. Though he separated from soon after their LP, Bones' success gave him entry into the world of international DJing during the early '90s, and his remix work for and others led to a reputation as one of the preeminent house godfathers. He released almost a dozen CD's during the mid-to-late-'90s, including multiple volumes in the mix-album series Factory and Computer Controlled as well as his own production work on the 1998 house chronicle Technolo-G. These were followed a year later with a slew of EPs and singles from the New York native. Taking a more commercial path from his independent label Sonic Groove, Bones released the mix CD You Know My Name on Moonshine in November of 2000; a handful of other mix albums, along with a couple production-oriented projects, followed during the next several years. He has also recorded mixes for System, Instinct, and 611. His brother is also a high-profile DJ and producer." - John Bush, Rovi
