Alright, let’s dive into Nancy Holloway’s L’Air Qui Me Plait (As Usual)—a groovy little gem from 1964 that’s got some serious soul vibes. Released in France under the Decca label, this album blends pop and funk/soul with a style that feels like sipping espresso at a Parisian café while dancing in your seat. It’s not trying too hard to be cool—it just is. Let me tell you about two tracks that stuck with me. First up, the title track, “L’Air Qui Me Plait (As Usual).” Oh man, this one hits different. The opening chords grab you right away, all smooth and jazzy, like someone wrapping you in a warm blanket made of sound. Nancy’s voice? Pure magic. She doesn’t belt it out; instead, she lets her tone glide effortlessly over the melody, giving off major ‘I’m classy but also down-to-earth’ energy. And those backing vocals? They’re subtle but add so much texture—you can almost picture a small band jamming in the corner of a smoky club. I remember humming this tune for days after hearing it. It’s catchy without being annoying, which is kinda rare, right? Then there’s “Bye Bye (My Guy),” and wow, does this song have sass. It’s got a playful bounce to it, like Nancy’s waving goodbye to something—or someone—with zero regrets. You know when you’ve had enough of someone’s nonsense and just wanna strut away? That’s what this track feels like. The rhythm section is tight, keeping things funky yet light, and her delivery has this cheeky confidence that makes you want to sing along even if you don’t speak French. Plus, the horn bits sprinkled throughout? Chef’s kiss! This one stayed stuck in my head because it’s impossible not to feel empowered listening to it. Reflecting on this album, I gotta say—it’s wild how music from over half a century ago still resonates today. Like, sure, production techniques were simpler back then, but the heart and soul shine through loud and clear. Listening to these songs felt like flipping through an old photo album where every snapshot tells a story. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. Who knew a French pop-soul record could make me rethink my whole playlist? Guess sometimes the best discoveries come from places you least expect. Now excuse me while I go find more Nancy Holloway tunes before they disappear into obscurity again!
