Moody Grooves Vol. II: A Deep Dive into Johnny Fiasco’s Electronic Masterpiece If you’re a fan of deep house and house music, Moody Grooves Vol. II by Johnny Fiasco is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Released in 1997 via Japan’s Rhythm Republic label, this record feels like a late-night secret shared between friends who really get it. It’s moody, groovy, and layered with vibes that stick to your soul long after the needle lifts—or the playlist ends. Fiasco wears multiple hats here—producer, writer, vibe curator—and he nails all three roles. The album spans nine tracks, each oozing its own flavor of electronic magic. Two standouts? “Sweet Emotion” and “Subsonic.” Let’s break ‘em down. “Sweet Emotion” kicks things off with a warm bassline that just hugs your ears. There’s something about how the synths glide over the beat—it's smooth but not too slick, kinda like an old leather jacket that still fits perfectly. You can tell Fiasco wasn’t trying to reinvent the wheel here; instead, he refined what was already working. This track stays with me because it’s got this nostalgic pull, like hearing a song from your past but not quite remembering where or when. It’s dreamy without being overly sentimental, which hits just right. Then there’s “Subsonic,” which flips the script entirely. Where “Sweet Emotion” soothes, “Subsonic” moves. The percussion hits harder, the groove digs deeper, and suddenly you're not just listening—you’re feeling it. It’s rawer, grittier, almost like Fiasco wanted to remind us that dance floors exist for losing control. I remember this one vividly because halfway through, there’s this unexpected drop that catches you off guard every time. Feels like tripping over nothing, then realizing you’re still standing. The rest of the album keeps the energy balanced. Tracks like “Calmado” bring chill moments, while bangers like “Get Up” keep your feet tapping. Even the playful “Funkies Funk 1 & 2” add some spice without tipping into cheesy territory. Fiasco clearly knows his audience—he respects their intelligence but also wants them to have fun. What makes Moody Grooves Vol. II special isn’t just its sound—it’s the way it transports you. Listening to it feels like stepping into a dimly lit Tokyo club circa '97, surrounded by people who are as lost in the music as you are. And honestly, isn’t that what good house music should do? Here’s the kicker, though: despite being nearly three decades old, this album doesn’t feel dated. Maybe it’s the timeless nature of deep house, or maybe Johnny Fiasco had some kind of crystal ball hidden in his studio. Either way, Moody Grooves Vol. II proves that sometimes the best tunes aren’t chasing trends—they’re setting them. So next time you’re looking for something to spin during sunset or a midnight drive, give this one a shot. Just don’t blame me if you end up playing it twice.

About Johnny Fiasco

Chicago-born Juan Lopez grew up in the predominately Hispanic Pilsen neighborhood where he was influenced by music at an early age. Soon after his high school years, he traded playing guitar in rock and funk bands for home studio technology that allowed him the freedom to produce his own music without the confines and frustrations that playing in a band presented. Around this time Johnny began his career as a DJ at some of the first underground "house" parties in Chicago, and in '88 he landed a residency at Smart Bar with Mark Farina. Three years later he turned a potentially devastating incident into a source of motivation to focus on his career as a producer and began to record for Moonshine, Radikal Fear and the world-renowned Cajual Records. He has produced a number of Billboard hits, remixed the likes of Justin Timberlake, Gloria Estefan, KD Lang and Donna Blakely (just to name a few), and has released records on just about every house label worth listening to. His outstanding musical accomplishments have attracted worldwide attention to this humble artist, and his ongoing musical endeavors continue to play a major role in defining the past, present and future of house music.
