Tom Jones - Spirit In The Room

Review by Omar Florentini

Album Review: Spirit In The Room by Tom Jones (2013) Tom Jones’ Spirit In The Room is a masterclass in blending genres and emotions, released in 2013 under Island Records and other labels across Europe, Russia, the US, Canada, South East Asia, and Australia. This album doesn’t just sit comfortably in one category—it spans Pop/Rock, Blues, Folk, World, Country, and Adult Contemporary, with styles ranging from Blue-Eyed Soul to AM Pop. It’s an eclectic mix that feels like flipping through a well-worn photo album of musical memories. The production, helmed by Ethan Johns, gives the record a raw yet polished feel. You can tell Johns didn’t overthink things—he let Tom’s iconic voice do most of the talking. And boy, does it talk. At 73 years old at the time of release, Jones sounds as powerful as ever, his vocals dripping with grit and grace. Tracks like “Dimming of the Day” and “Tower of Song” stand out for different reasons but leave lasting impressions. “Dimming of the Day,” originally written by Richard Thompson, feels hauntingly intimate. Tom’s delivery here is almost conversational, like he’s leaning over a bar stool sharing secrets only you’re privy to. The arrangement is sparse—just enough instrumentation to cradle his voice without overshadowing it. There’s something about how he stretches certain words, giving them weight they didn’t have before. By the end, you’re left wondering if this song has always been yours or if Tom just made it so. Then there’s “Tower of Song,” Leonard Cohen’s poetic ode to artistic struggle. Jones tackles it with reverence but also a sense of ownership, turning what could’ve been a cover into a personal statement. His growl on lines like “I was born like this, I had no choice” hits hard—it’s less singing, more storytelling. Producer Ethan Johns deserves credit here too; the mix lets every note breathe while keeping the focus squarely on Tom’s performance. What makes Spirit In The Room work isn’t just its tracklist—it’s the way it captures Tom Jones not as some relic of the past but as a living, breathing artist still deeply connected to music. Sure, there are moments where the pacing drags slightly, and some listeners might find the folk-heavy direction unexpected compared to his earlier hits. But those minor hiccups don’t detract much from the overall experience. One thing that sticks with me after listening? How unapologetically human this album feels. Whether it’s the gospel-tinged “Lord Help The Poor & Needy” or the reflective “When the Deal Goes Down,” these songs remind us we’re all stumbling through life looking for meaning. Tom doesn’t try to sugarcoat anything—he meets you where you are, flaws and all. And honestly? That’s kinda refreshing. In a world full of auto-tuned perfection and Instagram filters, Spirit In The Room feels like a hand-written letter tucked inside an old book. It’s messy, real, and beautiful in its imperfections. If you’re searching for an album that speaks to the soul rather than just the ears, give this one a spin. Just don’t be surprised if you catch yourself humming “Dimming of the Day” days later—it sneaks up on ya when you least expect it. Final thought: Who knew Tom Jones could make me want to cry and grab a whiskey at the same time? Guess that’s the magic of great music.

To witness a late-career resurgence of a singer in their 60s or 70s isn't as rare as it used to be. In fact, it seems to happen more often than one would expect. Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Loretta Lynn, Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, and Lucinda Williams all released important records later on in life. Add Tom Jones to that list also. As was the case with 2010s Praise

A perfect example of “riveting restraint.”

He doesn’t oversing a single note. Other, younger singers would incinerate this. He goes for glow and slow burn. He serves the song impeccably. A master, this man.

A few years ago, my wife and I flew coast to coast, to see Tom open for Morrissey in Los Angeles. I kid you not when I say, I would cross the country just hear him perform this one song.
