Hunters And Collectors - The Jaws Of Life

Review by Marek Tomalski

The Jaws of Life by Hunters and Collectors: A Raw, Unpolished Gem from ‘84 So, here’s the deal—The Jaws of Life isn’t your run-of-the-mill rock album. Released in 1984 across the US, UK, and Canada under labels like Slash, Epic, and Warner Bros., this record dives deep into art rock and indie rock vibes without trying too hard to impress. And honestly? That’s what makes it stick. First off, let’s talk about "42 Wheels." This track hits you right outta nowhere with its gritty energy. You’ve got Mark Seymour belting his heart out while the band backs him up with layers of sound that feel chaotic but still somehow cohesive. The mix of Jack Howard’s trumpet and Michael Waters’ trombone adds this weirdly cool brass punch that just doesn’t show up in most rock albums. It’s raw, kinda messy, but super memorable—like hearing someone spill their soul over a cracked speaker system. I mean, who else thought to throw horns into an indie rock tune back then? Props to them for pulling it off. Then there’s “I Believe (Ray Charles).” Yeah, yeah, they didn’t write it—it’s a cover—but damn, do they make it their own. Conny Plank’s production shines here; the whole thing feels massive, almost cinematic. Mark Seymour sounds like he's singing not just to you, but through you. There’s something haunting yet uplifting about how they take this classic and turn it inside out. Every time I hear it, I get goosebumps. Like, wow, these guys really knew how to take risks without losing themselves. One thing worth mentioning is the artwork by Geoff Crosby—it’s simple but striking, kinda like the music itself. And can we give a shoutout to Doug Falconer on drums AND percussion? Dude’s keeping everything tight even when things threaten to spiral out of control. Same goes for John Archer on bass—he lays down grooves so solid you could build a house on ‘em. Now, sure, some tracks don’t hit as hard as others. But overall, The Jaws of Life feels alive in a way few albums do today. Maybe it’s because it wasn’t polished within an inch of its life. Or maybe it’s because every note screams authenticity. Either way, it’s one of those records that reminds you why music matters. Here’s the kicker though—listening to this now, it almost feels ahead of its time. Indie bands today would kill for this kind of fearless experimentation. So next time you’re scrolling Spotify looking for something real, skip the playlists and check this bad boy out. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find yourself hitting repeat more than you expected.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The album *The Jaws Of Life* by Hunters And Collectors, released in 1984, was a true collaborative effort with some unique touches. For instance, the legendary German producer Conny Plank, known for his work with bands like Kraftwerk and Neu!, helped shape its raw, experimental sound. Geoff Crosby not only handled the artwork but also played keyboards and added effects, giving the album a distinct sonic personality. Plus, it features a cover of Ray Charles' "I Believe," adding a soulful twist to their rock roots. It's wild how many creative minds came together to make this record stand out across genres like Art Rock and Indie Rock!
