Review by Kerrie Tuck

Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Duke Ellington Song Book Vol. 1: A Jazz Masterclass That Still Hits Different Alright, let’s talk about this gem—Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Duke Ellington Song Book Vol. 1. Released in 1958, it’s one of those albums that makes you go, “Wow, they really don’t make ‘em like this anymore.” With Ella’s voice gliding over Duke Ellington and his orchestra’s lush arrangements, it’s basically a masterclass in jazz coolness. And yeah, it’s got all the swing and big band vibes you’d expect from a Verve Records release. First off, can we just take a moment for “Take The ‘A’ Train”? I mean, come on. This track is iconic for a reason—it’s smooth, it’s sharp, and Ella just owns it. You can practically feel the energy of New York City pulsing through your headphones. What gets me every time is how effortless she sounds. Like, does anyone really sing with that kind of ease? It’s almost annoying how good she is. But hey, that’s Ella for ya. She could probably read the phone book and make it sound like poetry. Another standout has to be “Mood Indigo.” This one hits different, man. The way Duke’s orchestra lays down those moody chords while Ella floats above them is pure magic. There’s something about her phrasing here—it’s soft but full of emotion, like she’s telling you a secret only you’re supposed to hear. Plus, the sax solo? Chef’s kiss. Every time I listen to it, I find myself zoning out, lost in the vibe. It’s not just music; it’s an experience. Now, let’s chat production real quick. Norman Granz was the producer, and dude knew what he was doing. He paired Ella with Duke’s band, and honestly, it feels like destiny. The remastering job by Kevin Reeves and Phil Schaap also deserves props because everything sounds crisp without losing that warm, vintage charm. Oh, and shoutout to Peter Keepnews for the liner notes—they’re insightful without being pretentious, which is harder than it sounds. What I love most about this album is how timeless it feels. Sure, it came out in the ‘50s, but tracks like “In A Mellow Tone” or “I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good)” still slap today. Whether you’re vibing at home, hosting a chill dinner party, or need some background noise while pretending to adult, this album delivers. Honestly, listening to this record feels like stepping into another era—an era where people wore suits to concerts and dancing wasn’t optional. But here’s the thing: even though times have changed, great music doesn’t age. If anything, Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Duke Ellington Song Book Vol. 1 proves that sometimes the best way forward is looking back. Oh, and random thought—can we all agree that Ella and Duke were basically the Beyoncé and Jay-Z of their day? Just saying.

Discovered Ella about 1946 when I was a ten year old schoolboy. At a fairground, they were playing "My happiness" which has remained with me ever since. I am now 86 and still love her so much. Regards to all Ella's fans. September. 2022.

Missed the Saturday dance
Heard they crowded the floor
Couldn't bear it without you
Don't get around much anymore

I thought I'd visit the club
Got as far as the door
They'd have asked me about you
Don't get around much anymore

Darling, I guess that my mind's more at ease
Or nevertheless, why stir up memories?
I've been invited on dates
Might have gone, but what for?
It's awfully different without you
Don't get around much anymore

Darling, I guess my mind's more at ease
But nevertheless, why stir up memories?
Been invited on dates
I might have gone, but what for?

It's awfully different without you
Don't get around much anymore
Oh baby, don't get around much anymore

Thanks! I never knew that those were Webster and Smith — thanks for the enlightenment. It truly doesn't get any better than this — Smith's tension is ecstatic in his opening tones. Ahhh ...

Superb. There are two halves to Ella Sings the Duke Ellington. Volume 2 (from which this is taken) is her with a small group. It's unbelievably good.
