Run To The Stranger by The Psylons: A Trippy Slice of 1986 Indie Rock Alright, let’s talk about Run To The Stranger by The Psylons. This album dropped in ‘86 on Crystal Records, and it’s one of those hidden gems that doesn’t get enough love. It’s a mix of indie rock with some seriously psychedelic vibes—like if you took a road trip through your mind while listening to it. The UK-based band brought their A-game here, blending raw energy with trippy soundscapes. And hey, props to Steve Hoffs and the band for producing this thing; they really nailed that balance between polished and gritty. Now, onto the tracks. First up, the title track “Run To The Stranger.” Man, this song sticks with me because it just feels alive. From the opening riff, it grabs you by the collar and pulls you into its world. There’s something about the way the guitars swirl around—kinda like being caught in a kaleidoscope—and then there’s that driving beat that keeps pushing forward. Lyrically, it’s got this mysterious vibe, almost like an invitation to follow someone into the unknown. I don’t know what exactly a "stranger" represents here (maybe freedom? rebellion?), but dang, it makes you wanna chase after it anyway. Then there’s “Tumbling Clown,” which is another standout. Honestly, this track feels like falling down a rabbit hole. The bassline grooves so hard, and the vocals have this slightly unhinged quality that matches the chaotic energy of the music. It’s not perfect—in fact, it kinda sounds like it was recorded in a garage—but that’s part of its charm. You can tell these guys weren’t trying to be flashy or overproduced. They just wanted to make something real, ya know? Plus, the lyrics are wild enough to keep you guessing—is this clown symbolic? Or are they literally singing about a circus disaster? Either way, it’s memorable as hell. The mastering credit goes to JONZ (all caps, baby), and you can hear his touch in how crisp everything sounds without losing that lo-fi edge. Big shoutout to him for letting the band’s personality shine through. So yeah, Run To The Stranger might not be everyone’s cup of tea. If you’re into super-polished stadium rock, this probably won’t hit the spot. But if you dig indie rock with a psychedelic twist, this album’s worth checking out. Listening to it feels like stepping back in time to the mid-’80s underground scene, where creativity ruled over commercial appeal. Oh, and here’s a random thought—what if The Psylons had access to modern tech back then? Would they still sound this raw and unfiltered? Food for thought. Anyway, crank this one up loud and let yourself get lost in it.

Are there any ' psylons' still willing to do gigs ? The psylons have always been a mainstay of my musical influence. RIP Carl Edwards. A great drummer and top bloke. We saw The Psylons several times in the 80s and their blistering version of Interstellar Overdrive/Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun is forever burnt into my memory.
