Ella Fitzgerald - Ella In Hamburg

Ella In Hamburg: Ella Fitzgerald’s Timeless Magic Lives On Alright, let’s get one thing straight—Ella Fitzgerald could sing the phone book and make it sound like a Grammy-worthy ballad. So when Ella In Hamburg dropped in 2007 (yeah, yeah, it’s technically a live recording from way back but remastered for our lucky ears), jazz fans everywhere probably did a little happy dance. Or at least raised their coffee mugs in appreciation. This album is like a smorgasbord of cool vibes, packed with genres ranging from smooth-as-butter vocal jazz to breezy pop standards that’ll have you tapping your toes even if you’re sitting in traffic. With labels like Verve Records backing her up—and some serious heavyweights such as the Tommy Flanagan Trio accompanying her—you just know this record was destined to be special. Plus, how can you not love an international release spanning Canada to Japan? It's basically the United Nations of music albums. Now, onto the tracks. There are plenty here—some repeats, sure, but hey, who doesn’t want seconds of something delicious? Two songs stuck out to me so much I had to rewind them twice (okay fine, maybe five times). First off, “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing).” Oh man. This track swings harder than my attempts at salsa dancing after two glasses of wine. Between Ella’s effortless scatting and Tommy Flanagan’s piano work—which honestly deserves its own medal—the whole thing feels electric. Like, if lightning were musical, this would be it. And Gus Johnson on drums? Forget about it. The rhythm section alone could power a small city. Every time Ella belts out that iconic line, I find myself nodding along like I’m auditioning for a jazz band. Spoiler alert: I am not. Then there’s “The Boy From Ipanema,” which might as well come with a beach chair and sunscreen included. It’s sultry, laid-back, and oh-so-cool—a perfect example of why Ella earned the nickname “The First Lady of Song.” Her voice glides over the melody like butter melting on warm toast, while Keeter Betts’ basslines add just enough depth to keep things interesting. Listening to this tune makes me wish I was sipping caipirinhas by Copacabana Beach instead of staring at my laptop screen. Thanks for nothing, Ella. But seriously, thank you. Of course, no review would be complete without mentioning Norman Granz’s golden touch as recording supervisor. Dude knew exactly how to capture Ella’s magic without overproducing it into oblivion. Kudos also go to Henning Birkenhake for remastering these gems; they sound crisp enough to trick you into thinking you're front row at the concert. So what’s the takeaway here? Well, aside from realizing I need more vacation days, listening to Ella In Hamburg reminds us why Ella remains untouchable decades later. She didn’t just perform songs—she lived them, pouring every ounce of soul into each note. Whether she’s belting swing classics or crooning bossa nova hits, Ella proves once again that great music transcends time zones, language barriers, and bad hair days. And now, because life is weird and wonderful, I’ll leave you with this random thought: If Ella Fitzgerald and aliens ever collaborated on an intergalactic jam session, I’m pretty sure we’d achieve world peace faster than you can say “scat solo.” Just saying.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Ella In Hamburg* by Ella Fitzgerald, released in 2007, is a treasure chest of jazz and pop greatness. It features her legendary performance with the Tommy Flanagan Trio, recorded live in Hamburg. What makes it even more special? The album was remastered by Henning Birkenhake, giving it a fresh sound decades after the original recordings. And get this—it includes an Ellington Medley that blends three iconic songs into one smooth ride. Not to mention, it found its way into over nine countries, from Canada to Japan, showing just how universal Ella’s voice truly is. Oh, and fun tidbit: she even adds her own flair to "A Hard Day’s Night," proving she could make any song feel like a classic standard.

Ella sings each word carefully. And listen to that orchestra. American music at it’s very finest.

To listen to Ella Fitzgerald and then to listen to Leontyne Price singing the same song back to back I can only say that Ella would have been a fabulous opera singer and that Leontyne would have been a great jazz singer. Their voices are equally well produced from the same mezza voce or "middle voice" that gives the singers agility and longevity. Leontyne would have had to work more on the jazz style and Ella in the opera repertoire.

Probably I have heard this version by Ella but did not realize much in my youth.. Sure I heard Dinah Washington's version and though the styles are different both are exquisitely beautiful indeed.

Superb, think her live recordings are best, more scope for jazz improvisation, this is a good example of her ability to do this.

My mother, Gloria, so loved this song. When I was about 6 I learned it, belted it out like Ella on night in the living room as she was getting ready to go out, she was stunned..she could not believe it. Besides my memory of this, it's only bested by the memory of her chasing down an ice cream truck in Venice Ca, 1970. I had been a "Good Boy"..her in her mumu house coat, flapping in the wind, waving a dollar. .Gosh I miss her sometimes.. but I keep her in my memory. ..
