Album Review: At Their Rare Of All Rarest Performances Vol 1 Released in 1980 by the Italian label Kings of Jazz, At Their Rare Of All Rarest Performances Vol 1 is a treasure trove for bop enthusiasts. This compilation brings together jazz titans Charlie Parker (alto saxophone), Fats Navarro (trumpet), Bud Powell (piano), Curly Russell (bass), and Art Blakey (drums). Despite its later release date, the recordings capture the raw energy and spontaneity of bebop’s golden era. The album features five tracks, but it’s “Cool Blues” and “Out of Nowhere” that stick with you long after the needle lifts. On “Cool Blues,” Charlie Parker’s alto saxophone takes center stage, weaving phrases so fluid they feel like an extension of his very breath. It’s not just technical wizardry; there’s a soulful grit to his playing that pulls you in. Meanwhile, Art Blakey’s drumming adds just enough fire without overshadowing the melody. You can almost picture smoky clubs and nodding heads lost in rhythm. “Out of Nowhere,” on the other hand, showcases Bud Powell’s brilliance on piano. His runs are lightning-fast yet precise, each note landing exactly where it should. Fats Navarro’s trumpet adds a warm counterpoint, creating a dialogue between the two instruments that feels both competitive and collaborative. These moments remind you why bebop was—and still is—a revolution in sound. What makes this album special isn’t just the lineup or the tunes themselves; it’s how unpolished everything feels. There’s no overproduction here, no attempt to smooth out the rough edges. Instead, you get real performances, warts and all, which somehow makes them more alive. The occasional crackle of old tape only adds charm, as if these recordings have stories to tell beyond the music. Reflecting on this collection, one thing stands out: it’s ironic that such vibrant performances were released decades after they were recorded. Maybe that’s part of its allure—the idea that greatness doesn’t always need immediate recognition. Or maybe it’s just proof that good music finds its audience eventually, even if it takes a little longer than expected. Either way, At Their Rare Of All Rarest Performances Vol 1 is a gem worth dusting off. P.S. If you’re wondering why Curly Russell didn’t get more spotlight, trust me, his basslines subtly glue everything together. Without him, the whole thing might’ve fallen apart. Funny how the quiet ones often hold the world up, huh?

American alto saxophonist, composer and bebop pioneer (b. August 29, 1920, Kansas City - d. March 12, 1955, New York City, aged 34). Widely considered to be one of the most influential of jazz saxophonists, jazz musicians, and indeed musicians in general. Also known as 'Bird' (a shortening of 'Yardbird', Parker acquired the nickname early in his career with many contradictory stories regarding the name's origin). Parker was an extremely fast virtuoso and introduced revolutionary harmonic ideas into jazz, including rapid passing chords, new variants of altered chords, and chord substitutions. Parker died on March 12, 1955 in the age of only 34 in the suite of his friend and patron Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter at the Stanhope Hotel in New York City. The official causes of death were lobar pneumonia and a bleeding ulcer, but Parker also had an advanced case of cirrhosis and had suffered a heart attack. The coroner who performed his autopsy mistakenly estimated Parker's 34-year-old body to be between 50 and 60 years of age.
