Review by Jonathan Corriere

Album Review: Le Charlatan by Dick Rivers (1968) Alright, let’s talk about Le Charlatan, the 1968 gem from French rocker Dick Rivers. If you’re into that sweet spot where rock meets pop with a dash of chanson and folk vibes, this one’s for you. Released under Pathé in France, it’s got this raw charm that screams late ‘60s but still feels kinda timeless. Oh, and fun fact: some tracks feature Le Muscleshoals Sound and an orchestra led by Paul Piot—yeah, fancy stuff for a guy known for his gritty voice and guitar chops. Now, I’ll be honest, not every track blew me away, but there are two that stuck like gum on a summer sidewalk. First up is “Personne Ne M’aime = Solitary Man.” It’s basically a French take on Neil Diamond’s classic, and Rivers makes it his own. The lyrics hit hard if you’ve ever felt like the world forgot you existed (haven’t we all?), and the melody’s got this melancholy groove that just pulls you in. Plus, hearing Rivers sing in French adds this whole other layer—it’s like heartbreak with style. Then there’s “Le Charlatan (Il Faisait Tomber La Pluie).” This one’s got swagger. Like, picture someone strutting down a rainy Paris street at night, trench coat flapping dramatically behind them. That’s the vibe. The mix of rock energy and poetic storytelling is straight-up addicting. You can tell Rivers put his soul into this one—he wasn’t just phoning it in, ya know? The rest of the album? Solid, but those two tracks really stand out. And hey, credit to whoever thought adding orchestral bits was a good idea—it works surprisingly well here. It gives the songs this lush, cinematic feel without drowning out Rivers’ signature edge. So yeah, Le Charlatan might not change your life, but it’s a solid listen if you dig old-school French rock or need something different to throw on while sipping wine and pretending you live in Montmartre. Honestly, though, what sticks with me most isn’t even the music—it’s how albums like this remind us how global rock ‘n’ roll really was back then. Who knew France had its own answer to guys like Dylan or Young? Cool, right? Anyway, give it a spin. Just don’t blame me if you end up humming “Personne Ne M’aime” for days.

R.I.P cher Dick.
