Album Review: Songs Of The Third And Fifth by The Mark Of Cain Alright, let’s get into it. Songs Of The Third And Fifth is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Released in 2013 by the Aussie rockers The Mark Of Cain, this thing is a raw, gritty slice of alternative rock goodness. It’s not trying to be perfect or polished—it’s just straight-up honest music with some serious attitude. First off, kudos to the lineup here. You’ve got John Scott wearing like five hats (vocals, guitar, keyboards, producer, songwriter—you name it), Kim Scott holding down the bass and killing it with the album art, and John Stanier smashing the drums like he’s got something to prove. Oh, and shoutout to Henry Rollins for jumping in on “Grey 11.” If you’re gonna feature someone, why not bring in punk royalty? Now, onto the tracks. I gotta say, Heart of Stone sticks with me. Not because it’s flashy or anything—it’s actually kinda simple—but there’s this relentless energy to it. The riffs are dirty, the vocals are snarling, and it feels like they recorded it live in a sweaty garage somewhere. There’s no overthinking; it’s just pure adrenaline. It reminds me of those moments when life gets heavy, and instead of wallowing, you crank up the volume and punch back. That’s what this song does—it punches back. Then there’s Grey 11 (feat. Henry Rollins). How could you forget this one? Rollins’ spoken word bit adds this eerie layer of depth, almost like he’s haunting the track. His voice cuts through like a knife while the band builds this ominous, slow-burning tension underneath. It’s dark, brooding, and weirdly cinematic. Like, if this song played during a movie scene where someone walks alone through an abandoned factory at night, I wouldn’t question it for a second. It’s unsettling but in the best way possible. The production deserves a nod too. Tom Coyne mastered this beast, and Forrester Savell mixed it, so yeah, it sounds tight without losing its rough edges. They didn’t sand off all the grit, which is exactly what a rock album needs. But here’s the kicker—this album isn’t gonna win any Grammys, and honestly, I don’t think it cares. It’s more about capturing a vibe than chasing fame. Listening to it feels like hanging out with old mates who still jam in their parents’ basement, except these guys happen to be insanely talented. Final thought? This record made me realize how much I miss albums that feel lived-in. These days, everything’s so filtered and calculated, but Songs Of The Third And Fifth feels real. Real messy, real loud, and real good. Also, fun fact: John Stanier played on four tracks AND co-wrote most of them. Dude was basically MVP. Anyway, go listen to it if you want rock that hits hard and doesn’t apologize for it. Oh, and hey—if you ever see Kim Scott around, tell him his photography skills are almost as badass as his basslines. Almost.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Songs Of The Third And Fifth* by The Mark Of Cain is a powerhouse of alternative rock with a unique twist. Released in 2013, it features Henry Rollins, the legendary punk icon, lending his voice to the track *Grey 11*. That’s right—Rollins didn’t just write it; he performed on it too. The album also showcases John Scott pulling triple duty as the vocalist, guitarist, and keyboardist, while Kim Scott flexes creative muscles not only on bass but also in cover design and photography. It’s a true family effort, blending raw energy with sharp artistry. Plus, having John Stanier (of Battles fame) on drums adds an extra layer of badassery. Rock doesn’t get much more authentic than this.

I must say that drum fill Craig after there in that section is awesome. Just show a not believing drummer that sort of section to hear Stanier's Original Talent/Skill. After that non predictable original drum fill he lands exactly back in with Kim and John.
Me neither. He can do better.

Loved the Mark of Cain since I first heard them on Triple J back in the mid 90s. This track is crushingly heavy, like a T34.
