Drive Time Devotions Vol. 1 by Gary McSpadden: A Little Something for the Soul If you’re looking for an album that’s not really music but still hits all the right notes, Drive Time Devotions Vol. 1 might just be your jam. Released back in 2002, this spoken-word gem from Gary McSpadden dives deep into faith, life lessons, and those little nuggets of wisdom we could all use during a long commute—or while folding laundry, let’s be real. The album spans topics like patience, honesty, prayer, and even how to deal with worry (spoiler alert: it's public enemy 1). With tracks like “Don’t Quit Too Soon” and “Angels All Around Us,” McSpadden delivers bite-sized sermons wrapped up in storytelling. It’s kinda like having a pastor riding shotgun, except way less awkward. One track that stuck with me was “Don’t Quit Too Soon.” This one feels especially timely because, well, who hasn’t felt like throwing in the towel at some point? McSpadden doesn’t sugarcoat things—he reminds us that sticking it out through tough times can lead to breakthroughs. The message is simple yet powerful: don’t give up before the miracle happens. I found myself nodding along as if he were speaking directly to my burnt-out soul. Plus, the title alone makes it perfect for anyone grinding through their own marathon of challenges. Another standout is “Angels All Around Us.” Now, I’m not usually someone who goes around spotting halos on people, but this piece had me thinking twice about the everyday heroes in my life. McSpadden paints vivid pictures of divine intervention showing up when you least expect it. By the end, I was half-convinced my barista might secretly be working miracles alongside my oat milk latte. Call me gullible, but hey—it gave me hope! What makes this album work isn’t fancy production or chart-topping beats; it’s the authenticity. You can tell McSpadden genuinely cares about helping folks find meaning in the mundane. And kudos to Ron Smith (executive producer) and Randy LeRoy (mastering guru), who kept everything crisp without overshadowing the heart of the project. Sure, Drive Time Devotions Vol. 1 won’t win any Grammys, but it wasn’t trying to. Instead, it carves out its niche as a companion for quiet moments or chaotic days. Whether you’re cruising down the highway or stuck in traffic, these reflections remind you there’s more to life than what’s happening right now. Oh, and here’s a random thought to leave you with: If they ever made a movie version of this album, would the soundtrack just be Gary talking over soft piano chords? Food for thought. So grab your copy—or stream it, whatever floats your boat—and let Gary keep you company next time life feels overwhelming. Who knows? Maybe you’ll walk away feeling lighter…or at least entertained enough to make it to the next exit.
