Ryo Kawasaki - Electric World

Review by Robert Villain

Electric World by Ryo Kawasaki: A Retro Blast That Still Shocks Alright, let me just say this—Electric World is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. It’s like a neon-lit rollercoaster ride through the '80s, but with enough futuristic vibes to make your head spin. Released in 1986 under the Satellites label, it’s got that raw, unfiltered energy only Ryo Kawasaki could pull off. And hey, shoutout to Ilana Iguana for bringing her magic touch to tracks A1 and B. This album isn’t perfect—it’s messy, wild, and kinda all over the place—but honestly? That’s what makes it unforgettable. Let’s talk about “Electric World (Original Version)” first because, damn, this track hits different. From the opening beat, you’re strapped in for a ride. The synths buzz around like they’ve been plugged into a live wire, and there’s this funky bassline that refuses to quit. There’s something almost nostalgic about how simple yet bold it feels. Like, you can practically picture someone rollerskating in leg warmers while this plays in the background. But don’t get me wrong—it’s not cheesy. It’s got soul. You feel it in every note, like Kawasaki was trying to capture lightning in a bottle. Spoiler alert: he did. Then there’s “727 (Instrumental),” which is just... wow. If “Electric World” feels like a party anthem, then “727” is its introspective cousin. No lyrics here, just layers of electronic wizardry that build and swell until you’re completely lost in it. At times, it sounds like a plane taking off—or maybe landing? Either way, it gives off major wanderlust vibes. I swear, listening to this track feels like staring out the window during a road trip, watching the world blur past. It’s hypnotic, man. Totally unexpected for an album rooted in freestyle and disco, but that’s what makes it stand out. And yeah, sure, “Electric World (Extended Version)” drags a little toward the end, but who cares when the rest of the album slaps so hard? Sometimes imperfections are what make music real, y’know? Reflecting on Electric World, it’s crazy to think this came out nearly four decades ago. It’s retro as hell, but somehow still feels ahead of its time. Maybe that’s why it sticks with you long after the last note fades. Or maybe it’s just that weird mix of nostalgia and futurism that keeps pulling you back. Whatever it is, this album proves that even in 1986, Ryo Kawasaki knew how to electrify a room—and our hearts. Oh, and random thought: if aliens ever visit Earth, I’m playing them this album first. Something tells me they’d dig it.
