Stupids - Leave Your Ears Behind

Leave Your Ears Behind by The Stupids: A Riotous Punk Rumble from 1984 Alright, let’s get into it. Leave Your Ears Behind by The Stupids isn’t exactly what you’d call “polished.” And honestly? That’s why it slaps. Released in ‘84 on Cant Come Records (yeah, that’s the label name—don’t ask me), this UK punk/hardcore gem feels like someone threw a brick through your window and shouted, “Wake up!” It’s raw, messy, and unapologetically loud—basically everything good music should be. First off, kudos to the crew behind this chaos. You’ve got Tommy smashing drums and screaming his lungs out, Wolfie doing double duty on bass AND violin (what??), Marty shredding guitar like he’s trying to start a fire, and Andrew Friar somehow making sense of all the noise as engineer. Oh, and Linden killed the artwork too—simple but gnarly, just like the tunes inside. Now onto the tracks. There are some bangers here, but two stuck with me for different reasons. First up is "You Die." Straight-up, this one hits like a punch to the gut. The opening riff grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. Tommy’s vocals sound like they’re being spat at you rather than sung, which fits perfectly because this track has zero chill. Lyrics-wise, it’s not rocket science, but who cares when it’s delivered with so much venom? Feels like they’re daring you to keep listening—and trust me, you will. Then there’s "Waltz Of The New Wavers." This one flips the script a bit. Sure, it still rips, but there’s something sneaky-clever about how they mix punk energy with almost… dancey vibes? I know, weird combo, right? But somehow it works. Maybe it’s Wolfie’s violin creeping in or the way the rhythm shifts around without losing its edge. Either way, it’s memorable as hell and shows The Stupids weren’t afraid to mess around within their genre. Respect. The album clocks in with other wild rides like "Skid Row" and "I Am Ill," both packed with attitude and grit. And yeah, while not every song lands perfectly, that’s kinda the charm. This isn’t about perfection—it’s about throwing everything against the wall and seeing what sticks. Most of it does. Looking back, Leave Your Ears Behind feels like a snapshot of punk before it got all glossy and commercialized. It’s rough around the edges, sure, but that’s what makes it real. Listening to it now, decades later, feels like finding an old flyer for a house show taped to a lamppost—you can practically smell the sweat and spilled beer. Oh, and here’s the kicker: apparently, Peter Davidson produced this thing. Yeah, THE Peter Davidson. If that ain’t random enough to make you chuckle, I dunno what is. Punk rock really is full of surprises, huh?

The Stupids, from Ipswich, England, formed in 1984 and played some blazingly fast US-influenced hardcore punk/thrash in a time and place that was mostly filled with crusty metal punk & anarcho-punk. Where other such bands had mainly poignant and political lyrics, the Stupids wrote comical, less serious lyrics on subjects as diverse as the elephant man, love (jokingly of course), hating everyone, hating new wave, skateboarding, and more. The bands "core" lineup featured on drums and vocals, on bass and vocals, and on guitar, recorded and released a demo tape in 1984 that they called "Leave Your Ears Behind." The band was picked up by UK label , who put out the Violent Nun EP (consisting of tracks from the demo) and the LP in 1985. While preparing for their next LP, the band lost Wolfie on bass and acquired (who would later move to guitar). Retard Picnic came out in 1986, whereby The Stupids were signed by . After the Stupids broke up in 1989, Tommy Stupid went on to drum in That's It, with the Stern brothers (of ), Ed formed Sink and even later on Chocolate, who were more pop-punk. More recently Tommy Stupid is better known as the drum n bass artist & is as far removed musically from The Stupids as is possible. In 2008 The Stupids reformed for what was supposed to be a one off live show in London. Realising the chemistry they still had as a live band, they went on to extend the live performances and even release a 7" with 3 new songs. Four of their early releases were also re-issued by on limited coloured vinyl.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The Stupids' album *Leave Your Ears Behind* is a wild mix of punk and hardcore energy, released back in 1984 in the UK. What makes it stand out? Wolfie, the band’s bassist, also played violin, adding an unusual twist to their raw, aggressive sound. And get this—the album was produced by Peter Davidson and engineered by Andrew Friar, giving it a gritty edge that fans still love today. Tracks like "Elephant Man" and "Waltz of the New Wavers" show just how fearless and creative the band was. Not your typical rock album, right?
