Review by Steven Bell

Album Review: Songs About The Man by Comadre If you’re into raw, unfiltered hardcore rock with a DIY edge, Songs About The Man by Comadre is an album that’ll grab your attention and refuse to let go. Released in 2005 through Coldbringer Recordings and B.T.C., this record feels like a punch to the gut—in the best way possible. It’s chaotic, energetic, and dripping with attitude, all while showcasing the tight-knit chemistry of the band members who clearly poured their souls into every track. Let’s talk about the lineup for a sec. With Juan on vocals, Jack and Kenny shredding guitars, Steven holding down bass duties (and handling layout too!), Wes smashing drums, and Hilary adding her magic touch where needed, this crew was firing on all cylinders. Oh, and props to Juan again—not just for his gritty vocal delivery but also for designing the cover art. These guys weren’t messing around when it came to wearing multiple hats. Now, onto the music itself. One standout track is “Burn The Scene!” Right off the bat, it hits you with relentless energy—Wes’s drumming feels like a runaway train, and Juan’s screams are equal parts angry and cathartic. There’s something infectious about how they balance chaos with melody here. It’s not just noise; there’s intention behind every riff and beat. You can almost picture the mosh pit forming as soon as this song drops at a live show. Another track worth mentioning is their take on Van Morrison’s “Sweet Thing.” Now, covering a classic tune like this could’ve been a disaster, but Comadre pulls it off with style. They strip it down to its bones and rebuild it with a grungy, hardcore twist. Hearing Juan’s raspy voice over the stripped-back instrumentation gives the song a whole new vibe—one that feels both nostalgic and fresh. It’s one of those covers that makes you appreciate the original even more while respecting the boldness of the reinterpretation. What really sticks out about Songs About The Man is its variety. Between blistering anthems like “Mess With The Best, Undress Like The Rest” and experimental moments like “The Hole In The Ship, S.O.S.,” the album keeps you guessing. And yeah, some tracks repeat or feel slightly redundant, but honestly? That adds to the charm. This isn’t some polished, overproduced studio project—it’s a snapshot of a band doing what they love, warts and all. On a personal note, listening to this album made me realize how rare it is these days to find records that feel so authentically human. Sure, modern production techniques have their place, but there’s something special about hearing imperfections and raw emotion bleed through the speakers. Plus, any band that includes jokes in their track titles (“Are You Guys Telling Jokes? I Like Jokes!”) gets bonus points from me for keeping things light amidst the heaviness. In conclusion, Songs About The Man might not be perfect, but maybe that’s the point. It’s messy, intense, and full of heart—a testament to what happens when a group of friends locks themselves in a room and lets creativity run wild. If you’re looking for an album that sounds like controlled chaos wrapped up in a sweaty basement show vibe, give this one a spin. Just don’t blame me if your neighbors start complaining. Oh, and hey—if anyone knows who actually has the golden ticket now, hit me up. I gotta know.

Notes

  • Hand numbered out of 300.
  • Mail order version out of 50 on teal green
  • and 250 on white(this)
  • This is a 2-part release: there is a 7" record with 4 songs ("Songs About The Man"), and a CD-R with 12 tracks ("More Songs About The Man"). The 12-track CD-R consists of the 4 songs from the 7", 2 covers, 1 remix, 1 live track, the 4 original tracks from the "Coffin" demo, and if you stick it in your computer, you can access some pictures from previous tours and hang out sessions and also a "music video" of some live clips
  • Test press edition available at the release show at 924 Gilman. They were numbered out of 25, but there were really 30 of these test presses. The band thought they ordered 25 and had already made the covers for them before they got them in the mail, so the extra 5 got numbered as "0/25" (this).
  • This edition comes with a hand-made cover, numbered 0/25 on the back. The vinyl has blank white labels with a small stamp indicating the A and B sides. The dust sleeve has a Coldbringer stamp. It doesn't appear to have included the CD-R or any inserts.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The album *Songs About The Man* by Comadre is a hardcore rock gem from 2005 that feels like a true labor of love. Jack, one of the band members, basically did it all—he recorded, mixed, and mastered the entire album. And get this—the band covered Van Morrison’s *Sweet Thing* and even threw in a Kid Dynamite cover for good measure. With tracks like *Welcome To Bloodtown* and *Burn The Scene*, it’s chaotic, raw, and full of energy. Oh, and Juan didn’t just sing—he also handled the cover art and layout. Talk about wearing multiple hats!
