Album Review: Johnny Bush’s "Undo The Right" – A Timeless Country Gem If you’re a fan of that raw, gut-punch kind of country music—ya know, the stuff that makes your chest tighten and your whiskey taste just a little sweeter—then Johnny Bush’s Undo The Right is probably already on your radar. Released in 1968, this album hits all the right notes for traditional country lovers, with a mix of honky-tonk swagger, heartfelt ballads, and enough fiddle to make you want to two-step straight into next week. Let’s talk tracks. First up, “Cold, Cold Hands.” This one sticks with me because it’s got this haunting vibe to it. Between Johnny Gimble’s fiddle work (man, does he ever know how to tug at your heartstrings?) and Bush’s voice—which sounds like he’s lived through every word he’s singing—it’s impossible not to feel something. It’s one of those songs where you can almost picture the smoke-filled bar, the dim lights, and some poor soul nursing their drink while thinking about love gone wrong. Honestly, I don’t even mind that they repeat “Cold, Cold Hands” a few times across the tracklist; each version feels like its own little story. Then there’s “Apartment 9,” which is just classic storytelling done right. You’ve got Dave Kirby laying down some killer guitar licks, and Buddy Harman keeping the beat steady as hell behind the drums. But what really gets me is the lyrics—they’re simple yet brutal. That line about living in an apartment so small it feels like jail? Oof. It’s relatable in a way that only country music can pull off. Plus, hearing different takes of this song scattered throughout the album gives it this weirdly personal touch, like we’re getting a peek into Bush’s creative process. The production here is tight but not overdone. Producer Pete Drake clearly knew when to step back and let the musicians do their thing. And props to Charlie Bradley and his crew in the studio—they kept everything sounding crisp without losing that live-band energy. Oh, and shoutout to Jimmy Day on steel guitar. Dude could probably make a dial tone sound emotional. What’s wild about Undo The Right is how timeless it feels. Sure, it came out over 50 years ago, but these songs still hit hard today. Maybe it’s because they tackle universal themes like heartbreak, regret, and trying to drown your sorrows in a bottle. Or maybe it’s just that good ol’ fashioned country charm that never goes out of style. Final thought? Listening to this album feels like finding an old Polaroid photo tucked inside a dusty book. It’s nostalgic, sure, but also kinda messy and real—and isn’t that what great music’s supposed to be? Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to pour myself another drink and hit replay… again.

The fabulous late step father of Amber Digby on his old ShotBuddy, Dickey Overbey. Johnny wound up and knocked this one over the Red River all the way from downtown Houston. May you all be playing at that Texas Honkey Tonk in Heaven. From my late wife’s notes. Her picture is there next to this addition. Gone to Heaven 22 months now. God rest her beautiful soul, and JB’s too. Her Denny.
