A Treasury Of Folk Music With Leadbelly: A Raw, Soul-Stirring Journey Through Time If you’re a sucker for music that feels like it’s been carved straight outta the earth, A Treasury Of Folk Music With Leadbelly is gonna hit you right in the feels. Released back in ’66 on Design Records, this album brings together some heavy hitters—Leadbelly, Josh White, and Big Bill Broonzy—all legends in their own right. It’s folk, blues, country, all mashed up into something that doesn’t just sound old-school; it feels ancient, like hearing stories whispered down through generations. The whole thing’s steeped in Country Blues, but don’t expect no frills here. This isn’t polished studio magic—it’s raw, gritty, and real. Like sitting by a fire somewhere deep in the South, listening to voices that carry pain, joy, struggle, and hope all at once. Two tracks stuck with me so hard I can still hear ‘em echoing in my head days later. First off, there’s “St. James Infirmary Blues.” Man, oh man. There’s something about the way Leadbelly sings it—it’s not flashy or overdone, just simple and devastating. The lyrics are bleak as hell (“I went down to St. James Infirmary, saw my baby there…”), but there’s this weird comfort in how he delivers them. Like yeah, life sucks sometimes, but we’re all in it together. When I heard those slow, mournful notes, I swear I could feel the weight of every heartbreak ever written into song. It’s haunting, sure, but also kinda beautiful. Then there’s “Baby Please Don’t Go,” which hits different. Where “St. James” feels like staring into an abyss, this one grabs you by the collar and shakes you awake. Big Bill Broonzy kills it here—his voice has this raspy urgency that makes you believe every word. You can almost picture him pleading under dim light somewhere, trying to hold onto someone slipping away. It’s desperate, alive, and messy in the best possible way. Every time that guitar riff kicks in, I get chills. Feels like running barefoot through gravel—painful but unforgettable. What gets me most about this album is how unapologetically human it is. These guys weren’t making music for fame or cash—they were telling truths, sharing pieces of themselves without caring if anyone listened. And somehow, decades later, people still do. Maybe because when you strip everything else away—the production tricks, the trends—you’re left with something timeless. Something real. Here’s the kicker though: listening to this record made me realize how much modern music misses that raw edge. Not saying everything needs to sound like it was recorded in someone’s living room, but damn, wouldn’t it be cool if more artists tapped into this kind of soul? Anyway, next time you’re feeling lost or overwhelmed, throw this one on. Let Leadbelly and crew remind you what it means to live, love, and ache—all at the same time.
