Digital Underground - Packet Man The CJ Mackintosh Remixes

Review by Stanley From

Yo, let’s dive straight into Packet Man: The CJ Mackintosh Remixes by Digital Underground—this ain’t your average Hip Hop record. Released in 1990 on BCM Records outta the UK & Europe, it slaps hard with its conscious vibe and raw creativity. Shock G’s production? Fire. CJ Mackintosh’s remixes? Straight gasoline. This is one of those albums that makes you sit up and think while still nodding your damn head. First off, “Packet Man (Analog Underground Mix)” hits like a freight train. It's gritty, funky, and dripping with attitude. You can tell Shock G had his hands all over this one—it’s got that signature DU chaos mixed with some brain food for thought. That bassline? Nasty as hell. And when Kenny K jumps in on the turntables, it feels like he’s scratching right inside your skull. This track sticks because it doesn’t just ride a beat; it tells a story about hustle culture without being preachy. Conscious rap done dirty but smooth—you feel me? Then there’s “Packet Man (Worth A Packet Mix).” Damn near stole the show. CJ Mackintosh took the original and flipped it into something fresh yet familiar. The sax riff in here? Chef’s kiss. Feels like cruising through London late at night with nowhere to be but trouble. Every layer builds tension until the groove locks you in so tight, you forget where you are. It’s clever how they tweak the energy levels—keeping it danceable but still edgy enough to keep you guessing what’s next. The rest of the tracks hold their own too. Whether it’s the OG LP mix or the radio edit, each version brings something different to the table. But honestly, these two cuts hit hardest—they stick in your brain like gum under a desk. What really gets me though? How unapologetically bold this project is. Back then, blending sharp social commentary with club-ready beats wasn’t exactly common. These dudes weren’t just making music—they were planting flags. Earl Cook and Kent Racker clearly knew what they were doing concept-wise, and Overton Lloyd’s cover art ties the whole package together. Even the mixing crew—Richard Corsello and Steve Counter—deserve props for keeping things tight. But here’s the kicker: listening to this now feels kinda surreal. Like, did people realize how ahead of its time this was? Or were they too busy trying to figure out who Packet Man even was? Either way, it’s wild how an album from three decades ago still bangs harder than half the stuff dropping today. Maybe we’re all just chasing that same magic… or maybe we’ve been sleepin’ on the real legends. So yeah, cop this if you can find it. Just don’t blame me when you start hearing Packet Man in your dreams.
