Released in 1998 under the Strauss and Portugalsom labels, this Portuguese gem blends modern classical sensibilities with a raw emotional punch. It’s not perfect—sometimes it feels like De Freitas gets lost in his own head—but when he nails it, oh man, does he nail it. The National Symphony Orchestra (Orquestra Sinfónica Nacional) brings these compositions to life under De Freitas’ baton. You can tell everyone involved poured their soul into this project. Frederico Guedes de Freitas nasceu a 15 de Novembro de 1902 em Lisboa, e iniciou os seus estudos de música com a mãe, Elvira Cândida Guedes de Freitas. Prosseguiu a sua formação musical no Conservatório Nacional em Lisboa a partir de 1915, tendo composto as suas primeiras obras aos 16 anos. Olá, Miguel! Quando li Velo D,Ouro, veio à minha mente o mundo da mitologia grega e a aventura dos Argonautas. Acho que o Frederico de Freitas deu primeiro esse nome à suntuosa peça musical, para fazer uma analogia entre os antigos gregos e o Império Colonial Português com os seus destemidos navegadores e colonizadores.
