Review by Richard Brooks

Album Review: My Little Flame by Kathryn Rose – A Journey Through Pop, Rock, and Everything In-Between Kathryn Rose’s My Little Flame is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Released in 2021 under the Canadian indie labels Footlodgedindoor Music and Kindling Music, this genre-blending project straddles pop, rock, adult alternative, and a touch of alternative rock. Produced, engineered, and arranged by Thomas Ryder Payne, with mastering handled by Greg O’Shea, it’s clear from the get-go that care went into every detail. And while Kathryn takes center stage as writer and vocalist, her voice feels like just one piece of a much bigger puzzle. The album’s strength lies in its ability to shift moods without losing cohesion. One track that stands out immediately is “Dear Mother Of A Dead Son.” It’s hauntingly raw yet beautifully composed, pulling listeners into an emotional whirlpool. The lyrics are poignant, almost uncomfortably so, tackling themes of loss and unresolved grief. What makes it stick? Maybe it’s how the instrumentation builds slowly—simple guitar work at first, then swelling strings—and Kathryn’s delivery hits you right in the chest. You don’t just hear this song; you feel it. Another standout is “Life’s Luxurious (Chill Mix).” With its dreamy vibe and layered production, it feels like floating through clouds. Unlike some tracks that demand your full attention, this one lets you drift along. There’s something hypnotic about the way the melody loops back on itself, creating a sense of infinite calm. Sure, there’s also a trance mix later in the album if you’re into high-energy beats, but the chill version? That’s where the magic happens. What surprised me most about My Little Flame was its refusal to be boxed in. Tracks like “Wichita Lineman,” a cover done with subtle twists, show off Kathryn’s versatility. Meanwhile, songs like “Come And Get Me” bring a playful edge that balances the heavier moments. Even repeated listens reveal new layers—like noticing Greg O’Shea’s meticulous mastering or Video Lake Media Arts’ moody photography tying everything together visually. If I had any gripe, it’d be that the album occasionally tries too hard to do everything. But honestly? That ambition works more often than not. By the time you reach “The Gift of This Moment,” you realize Kathryn isn’t just making music—she’s telling stories, painting pictures, leaving breadcrumbs for you to follow. In the end, My Little Flame reminds me of why we listen to albums instead of playlists. It’s messy, heartfelt, experimental, and deeply human—all rolled into one. Oh, and here’s the unexpected part: after listening to it, I found myself humming “Life’s Luxurious” while folding laundry. Not bad for an album born in Canada, eh?
