Review by Kenneth Malcolm

Erthrocyte Noise Syndrome: A Sonic Assault from the Edge of Sanity Let’s get one thing straight—Kenji Siratori and Noise+Nurse didn’t make Erthrocyte Noise Syndrome for the faint-hearted. Released in 2007 on Japan’s Hypermodern label, this album isn’t your typical electronic record; it’s more like a chaotic love letter to noise and experimentation. If you’re into music that feels like it crawled out of some glitchy dystopian fever dream, then buddy, you’ve hit the jackpot. The whole thing kicks off with Kenji Siratori helming track 1 (untitled, because why bother naming chaos?). Right off the bat, it hits you like an uninvited slap—sharp, abrasive, yet oddly hypnotic. It’s not so much “music” as it is a raw transmission from somewhere deep inside Siratori’s brain. The sound design here is dense, layered, almost suffocating—but weirdly compelling. You can tell he wasn’t trying to be nice or accessible. Instead, it’s like he wanted to challenge you: “Can you handle this?” Spoiler alert: maybe you can’t. Then there’s track 8 (also untitled—seriously, what’s with all these nameless vibes?), handled by Noise+Nurse. This one stands out because it flips the script just enough to keep you hooked. Imagine if static electricity had feelings—it would probably sound like this. There are moments where the distortion pulls back just slightly, letting tiny fragments of melody peek through before smothering them again in waves of sonic aggression. It’s messy, sure, but intentionally so. Like watching a car crash in slow motion—you know it’s ugly, but you can’t look away. What makes Erthrocyte Noise Syndrome stick in my head isn’t just its harshness. It’s how unapologetically itself it is. Kenji Siratori wrote the words, but they don’t feel meant to comfort anyone. They’re cryptic, fragmented, like shards of broken glass scattered across the floor of your mind. And Noise+Nurse? Their contributions feel like they were crafted in a lab designed specifically to test human tolerance for dissonance. Together, they create something that’s less about enjoyment and more about endurance—or maybe discovery, if you’re brave enough. By the time the final note fades into silence, you might find yourself wondering: did I just survive a brutal auditory assault, or was I somehow complicit in creating it? Either way, you won’t forget it anytime soon. And hey, here’s a random thought—what if this album isn’t really about music at all? What if it’s secretly training us for when AI takes over and starts composing everything? Food for thought… or maybe just another reason to crank up the volume and embrace the madness.
