Album Review: Un Tiempo Mejor by Julio Miranda – A Slice of Venezuelan Soul If you’re into Latin music with heart and grit, Un Tiempo Mejor by Julio Miranda might just hit the spot. Released way back in 1985 under Venezuela’s Araguaney label, this album feels like a warm hug from the past. It’s packed with tracks that blend traditional Venezuelan sounds—think arpa (that’s harp for us non-Spanish speakers), cuatro, bass, and maracas—with lyrics and melodies penned by Miranda himself. The result? Something both nostalgic and timeless. Let’s talk about two standout tracks that’ll stick with you long after the record stops spinning. First up is “Desesperado.” Man, this one grabs you right away. The opening notes on the arpa feel like sunlight breaking through clouds, and when the bass kicks in, it’s impossible not to nod along. What makes this track unforgettable is how raw it feels. You can almost picture Julio sitting somewhere late at night, pouring his soul into these words. It’s got that universal theme of longing but wrapped in a distinctly Venezuelan vibe. By the time the maracas start dancing around your ears, you’re hooked. Then there’s “Barquisimeto, Pueblo Querido.” This tune hits different if you’ve ever felt homesick or missed a place that shaped you. It’s less of a song and more of a love letter to Barquisimeto, Miranda’s hometown. The cuatro work here is insane—it’s playful yet emotional, kind of like laughing while holding back tears. And those lyrics? They’re simple but so vivid, painting pictures of streets, faces, and memories. Honestly, even if you’ve never set foot in Venezuela, this track will make you wish you had. The rest of the album follows suit, mixing upbeat rhythms with reflective moments. Tracks like “Rebaños De Mi Añoranza” and “Si Fueras Tu” keep things fresh without losing that authentic charm. Oh, and props to Candido Herrera on the arpa—he really brings the magic to every track. What strikes me most about Un Tiempo Mejor is how unpretentious it is. There’s no flashy production or over-the-top arrangements. Instead, it’s just good people making good music because they clearly love doing it. That sincerity shines through loud and clear. So yeah, give this album a spin if you want something real. It’s not perfect—it’s kinda rough around the edges—but isn’t that what makes it special? Plus, listening to it feels like stepping into a little corner of Venezuela in the ‘80s, which is pretty cool if you ask me. Random thought: I bet Aquilino Diaz could shake those maracas in his sleep. Dude’s got skills!
