Album Review: Guilty Conscience by Eminem – A Raw Slice of 1999 Rap Magic If you’re a fan of rap that hits hard and doesn’t pull punches, Guilty Conscience by Eminem is one of those albums that’ll slap you awake. Released in ‘99 under Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records, it’s got all the grit of Midwest Rap mixed with Hardcore and Gangsta vibes. And yeah, Dr. Dre being both producer and featured artist? That’s like having your cake and eating it too. Let’s dive into two tracks that stick out—because honestly, this album could’ve been called “The Guilty Conscience Show” for how much mileage they got outta that song. First up, “Guilty Conscience (Album Version).” This track feels like a short film wrapped in beats. You’ve got Eminem playing devil-on-your-shoulder while Dre plays the angel—or at least tries to act rational. The storytelling here is unreal; every scenario builds tension until the gunshot drops you flat on your face. It’s wild because back then, nobody was really doing narrative rap like this. Plus, Mark Avery as the narrator adds this eerie layer that makes you feel like you're watching a twisted movie trailer. Every time I hear it, I’m reminded why Em became such a big deal so fast—he didn’t just spit bars; he told stories that stuck. Then there’s “My Name Is.” C’mon, who can forget this banger? Even if you weren’t alive in ‘99, chances are you’ve heard someone mock-sing, “Hi, my name is… WHAT?” It’s catchy as hell, but don’t let the humor fool you—it’s sharp. Em flips between playful and dark effortlessly, poking fun at himself while still dropping lines that make you think twice. The video version amps it up even more with visuals that were straight fire for its time. Honestly, this track feels like Eminem saying, “Hey world, remember my name,” and dang, did we ever. What strikes me about Guilty Conscience isn’t just the music—it’s the attitude. Back then, hip-hop was evolving fast, and Em came in swinging like a wrecking ball. He wasn’t trying to fit any mold; he was breaking them. Listening now, it’s kinda crazy how fresh it still sounds, especially when compared to some overly polished stuff today. Random thought: Did anyone else notice how many versions of “Guilty Conscience” are on here? Like, do we really need an instrumental AND an a cappella AND two radio edits? Feels like Dre and Em were just messing with us. But hey, maybe that’s part of the charm. So yeah, Guilty Conscience might not be perfect, but it’s real. Real raw, real funny, real messed-up sometimes—and honestly, isn’t that what great music’s all about? If you haven’t spun this yet, grab your headphones and prepare to get hit with some serious late-‘90s nostalgia. Or just blast “My Name Is” and annoy your neighbors. Either way works.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know? Eminem's "Guilty Conscience" album, released in 1999, wasn’t just another rap record. It was a bold mix of Hardcore Rap, Midwest Rap, and Gangsta Rap, with Dr. Dre pulling double duty as both producer and featured artist. What’s wild is that the album included so many versions of the track "Guilty Conscience"—instrumental, a cappella, radio edits with and without gunshots—you could almost feel the creative experimentation jumping out of the speakers. And get this: it dropped not only in the US but also in South Africa, showing just how far Eminem’s raw storytelling and Dre’s iconic beats could reach.

This version of the song, with the narrator and music inbetween verses make it so much better imo, shame this doesn't exist uncensored

Edit: An uncensored version does exist on YT, but not spotify unfortunately, and I couldn't find this narrator as well, only the album version.
